Performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analysis. Conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses of body fluids, blood group, type and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes. Duties also include phlebotomy and instrument maintenance. Interacts with patients, physicians, and hospital staff on a customer service basis with focus on quality patient care.
Performs routine and special laboratory testing and resulting within established turn around times. Interprets analytical findings and/or test results to assess compliance or non-compliance with company and industry standards. Independently evaluates and analyzes test results to ensure accuracy; recognizes test inconsistencies taking appropriate corrective action; calls critical test results according to established criteria. Follows manufacturer’s instructions for instrument or test system operation and test performance.
Perform specimen collection (including phlebotomy), handling processing, and testing following established procedures. Ensures specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity to ensure reliable test results.
Performs instrument maintenance and calibrations. Troubleshoots instrument problems.
Performs quality control testing following written procedures for monitoring and evaluating the quality of the analytical testing process of each method assuring the accuracy and reliability of patient test results and reports.
Performs quality assurance procedures monitoring and evaluating patient test management, quality control, proficiency testing, remedial action for unacceptable results. Assists in the identification and evaluation of patient test results which appear inconsistent with relevant criteria (i.e. patient age, sex, etc.) Follows documentation system which identifies problems, assures investigation, initiates corrective action to prevent recurrence or minimize issue.
Maintains skill level and completes verification, competency and/ or proficiency. Meets requirements of regulatory agencies.
Requires Bachelors degree with successful completion of accredited Medical Technology Program or Clinical Laboratory Examination. Education and experience in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
