    PACU Clinical Surgery Technician

    Full Time 40 hours/week 9:30am-6:00pm

     

    Ensures that all diagnostic laboratory procedures are ordered, performed and reported to the appropriate provider in a timely and efficient manner. Maintains all accreditation requirements for laboratory testing as dictated by the Joint Commission, CLIA and Department of Public Health.

    Responsibilities

    • Collects, processes and completes a variety of clinical specimens following standard laboratory practices
      • Displays an understanding of general specimen collection guidelines
      • Able to collect and verify integrity of both venous and capillary blood specimens
      • Able to collect urine sample, i.e., catheterization, clean catch
      • Recognizes a sample that is not acceptable for testing
      • Refers to other staff or manual for correct collection and handling protocol when needed.
      • Processes samples as directed by procedure or protocol
      • Able to order all tests on computer and through alternate method when computer is down.
      • Treats each patient with respect and dignity during the collection process
      • Labels samples as per policy
      • Verifies patient identity prior to collection a specimen
      • Notifies RN when a sample is not obtained or not acceptable for testing
      • Acts only on an order from a physician for collection and testing
      • Informs physician or clinical staff when there is a patient flow problem
      • Asks for assistance with a difficult collection or heavy workload
      • Conveys warmth and concern to patient and utilizes methods to decrease patient anxiety
      • Maintains annual and as needed competencies as dictated by MMCI protocol and policy
      • Performs lab testing as appropriate
    • Completes test analysis and result reporting according to standard, written laboratory procedures.
      • Acts only on written orders for laboratory tests
      • Follows up on verbal orders to get a written order for testing
      • Completes appropriate lab test as ordered by physician.
      • Verifies the integrity of the sample prior to testing
      • Follows the standard, written procedure for all test analysis
      • Legibly records test results on chart, results sheet or logs as dictated by department protocol.
      • Notifies the ordering physician immediately of critical results
      • Asks for assistance with difficult procedures or when workload exceeds reasonable amount
      • Discusses results or findings with other clinical staff or physicians in order to clarify results or alleviate concerns with the testing process.
    • Performs and appropriately documents quality control values, preventive maintenance tasks, quality assurance probes and proficiency testing analysis.
      • Understands the importance of performing and documenting routine quality control.
      • Acts according to policy when quality control system fails
      • Uses problem solving skills in investigation of QC failures or problems
      • Demonstrates proficiency in performing routing maintenance on instruments/equipment
      • Documents all maintenance performed: Dates and Initials each entry in log
      • Participates in the Quality Assurance program established by the MMCI laboratory.
      • Brings to staff meetings, problems, concerns or questions regarding lab processes in the department.
      • Analyzes proficiency testing samples just as patient samples.
      • Appropriately documents all PT testing. Understands the significance of PT testing in the office lab
      • Keeps records or logs up to date for QC, PM, QA and PT.
      • Able to address with other staff or providers, concerns with their QC or PM .
      • Regularly checks supplies for outdates and is knowledgeable about shelf life of all supplies.
    • Performs a variety of clinical or clerical support functions to assure smooth and efficient flow of department processes.
      • Maintains patient log with accurate information.
      • Enters orders into computer in timely manner.
      • Obtains lab results from computer and prints results for RN to notify physician.
      • Ascertains assistance from appropriate clinical patient privacy at all times.
      • Informs patient what will happen next during each step of process.
      • Maintains annual and as needed competencies per MMCI protocal and policy.
      • Learns the functions of all new equipment and procedures.
      • Connect/disconnect patient from monitors in PACU.
      • Discontinue I.V.s as directed by RN.
      • Hang CBI bags.
      • Fill polar care/cryocuff as directed by RN.
      • Willingly responds to delegation by RN or charge personnel
      • Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize work.
      • Assists the clinical areas with routine duties such as maintenance, cleaning and record keeping
      • Supports the clinical staff through the performance of ancillary procedures such taking vital signs, assist patient with changing clothes and any other patient need identified.
      • Files reports to patient charts in timely manner.
      • Assists with faxing and copying and ascertaining old patient records.
      • Assists patients/families to bathroom, waiting room
      • Informs patients/families of delays
      • Sees that proper equipment is in the patient care area such as SCD machine, inspirometer and others as needed.
      • Pulls charts on an as needed basis and delivers to appropriate area or provider.
      • Maintains a clean workspace
      • Attends area or department meetings as required.
      • Utilizes time and supply resources productively.
      • Uses slow time to improve department appearance, stock, clean and to assist other healthcare members with their workload
      • Be available to be assigned on-call hours outside of scheduled work-hours, which include after-hours, weekends and holidays. And if contacted while on-call, respond in the time frame as defined by the needs of the department.

    Qualifications

    Education

    High School Diploma /GED Preferred

     

    Work Experience

    1-3 years of experience in/with laboratory setting, i.e. testing protocols, medical terminology and laboratory regulations, laboratory procedures and protocols Preferred.

     

    License and Certification

    Other: Valid CPR required within 60 days of start date as clinical tech
