      • Answers questions and provides teaching to patients and family members as directed by provider. (C)
      • Documents appropriate information in the patient’s chart. Complete patient forms and file medical records/correspondence. (C)
      • Schedule referrals for patients with specialist or outpatient as requested by the provider. Complete appropriate forms or requisitions needed for referrals or lab testing, including appropriate CPT/ICD-9 coding. (C)
      • Assist provider with patient examination, procedures and emergencies. (C)
      • Maintain inventory for clinical supplies. (F)
      • Perform diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures. (C)
      • Instruct patients with special instruction given by the provider. Provide patient education as directed. (F)
      • Prepare and assist provider with patient examination, specimen collection, minor surgical procedures and treatment of the patients, including administration of medication under direct supervision of the provider. (C)
      • Handle emergencies, as necessary. (O)
      • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations. (C)
      • Integrates and demonstrates CORE values and Expectations for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures of IH-DM.       • Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. (C)
    • Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule. (C)


    • Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately. (C) OTHER FUNCTIONS: The following are performed on an as needed basis:
    •  This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the IH-DM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.
    • Performs functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances.


    EDUCATION:   Graduate of an accredited LPN nursing program or a nationally accredited, medical assistant program,


    EXPERIENCE:   Previous clinical experience preferred/desirable.


    LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:   A state of Iowa nursing license, nationally accepted medical assistant certification required. Licenses & Certifications must be maintained.
