The Microbiology Technical Lead assists the Laboratory Managers in process improvement of the pre-analytic, analytic and post analytic processes of Microbiology testing. Specifically, the Technical Lead assures those processes related to specimen handling/retention; quality control, testing, and result reporting- with respect to Microbiology are in compliance with CAP and all accrediting standards. The Microbiology Technical Lead shall work at the Laboratory Managers’ direction to fulfill strategic and performance improvement initiatives. Promoting the philosophy and achieving the objectives established by the hospital Board of Directors and the Management team is foremost among these responsibilities along with solving practical and strategic problems, resolving conflict and constructively leading change.
Leads by example, allowing staff to use problem-solving skills in technical and work relationships. Foster independent and innovative thinking Assures competence of staff through monitoring a defined competency testing and documentation program. Manages day-to-day activities, including measurement of the department/unit's effectiveness. Ensures work processes meet the needs for privacy (HIPAA) and accuracy. Holds employees accountable to high performance standards and expectations. Reviews procedures and policies as relating to activities for staff, encouraging participation and allow opportunity for staff to write and update procedures. Investigates and follows up on incidents that concern quality activities. Incorporate learning to improve training and procedures. Upholds measurable goals for quality assurance/performance improvement in alignment with organizational strategies. Assists with adjusting staff schedules when necessary to meet the immediate needs of the department and laboratory. Responsible for ensuring department's daily/weekly/monthly functions are completed and documented as appropriate. As appropriate with technical leadership and education coordinator, leads the review, revision and evaluation of training requirements for staff assuring these requirements meet the needs of new employees and is consistent with the needs of the organization. Ensures all assigned employees are trained in equipment use, instrument troubleshooting, specimen testing, and interpretation/evaluation of results including routine and critical value reporting. Facilitate training of employees in appropriate patient conduct, phone etiquette and interaction with all support staff. Develop personnel and provide training for their own replacement.
The rapid changes in technology require the incumbent to evaluate new equipment with the expertise of technical leadership. The cost justification of new technology and the marketing of the new services to physicians. This position must remain knowledgeable of new instrumentation, software programs, within point-of-care processes, which may provide improved services to referring physicians and improved quality of care to patients. Recommendations on enhanced and/or new services especially requiring additional personnel and capital equipment acquisition are documented and forwarded to the Laboratory Managers and Director of Laboratory Services. Assumes an active role in physician relations. Assumes a role in physician relations for Lab services. Responds to physician and nursing concerns and insure that all services are provided in a timely manner and meet the patient's needs. Works with medical directors of all campuses and their staff to improve services and to develop new business. Develops long term objectives and strategies and then implements plans within the department to accomplish these goals. The incumbent will give presentations as needed.
Education: MLT, MT, MLS (ASCP) certified or eligible. Microbiology Technical Lead : “Within the laboratory’s organizational structure, the actual position titles may be different.” CAP General Supervisor – Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution with at least two years of training and/or experience in non-waived testing. Training and experience must be in the designated specialty or sub-speciality area of service for which the individual is responsible. Individuals meeting the Bachelor’s degrees qualifications and general supervisor experience may assess the competency of high (if applicable) and moderate testing. Experience: Minimum of 5 years of Clinical Laboratory or Anatomic Pathology Experience with Leadership responsibilities. CLIA Personnel Guidelines – General Supervisor. MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT) or CLS (NCA) certified, with a minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience, is strongly preferred. CLA or MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent education and experience, with two years of clinical laboratory experience, would be considered. CLIA 493.1461 The laboratory must have one or more general supervisors who, under the direction of the laboratory director and supervision of the technical supervisor, provides day- to-day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. In the absence of the director and technical supervisor, the general supervisor must be responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results. CAP
