This position is responsible for evaluating, counseling and educating individuals in treatment.
The work involves facilitating overall case planning for clients and their families and maintaining all necessary documentation of a client’s involvement in treatment. Supervision is provided by the Program Manager or designee.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field; experience with counseling or related human service activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Knowledge of different approaches to counseling.
Knowledge of human behavior and performance for the assessment and treatment of substance abuse disorders Specific knowledge necessary for working with special populations (i.e., adolescent developmental issues).
Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of substance abuse including pharmacological factors.
Knowledge of the American Society of Addiction Medicine placement criteria and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual as it relates to substance-related disorders or able to acquire the knowledge.
Knowledge of the Code of Ethics for substance abuse counselors.
Knowledge of the federal drug and alcohol confidentiality law (42 C.F.R. Part 2) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Ability to work with a diverse population.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to work a varied schedule to include some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other outside professionals and the general public.
Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with or without reasonable accommodation where applicable.
Skills in the operations of computer word processing applications.
NECESSARY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Counselor Certification through the State of Iowa or Illinois within the first two years of employment.
