Overview

This position is responsible for evaluating, counseling and educating individuals in treatment.

 

The work involves facilitating overall case planning for clients and their families and maintaining all necessary documentation of a client’s involvement in treatment. Supervision is provided by the Program Manager or designee.

 

Responsibilities

 

JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Screen clients to determine their appropriateness for admission to treatment or referral for other services.
  • Complete Intake documents for admission to a treatment level of care.
  • Orient a client to the general nature and goals of the program, client rights, program rules, and an overview of the program operations.
  • Assess a client’s strengths, weaknesses, problems and needs for development of a treatment plan.
  • Develop a treatment plan with the client.       Modify the treatment plan to comply with changes in the client’s status.
  • Provide individual or group counseling services to clients and families to assist in overcoming substance abuse problems.
  • Provide case management activities to coordinate other services, agencies, resources and people to assist a client in achieving their established goals.
  • Provide crisis intervention when the need arises.
  • Provide client education to individuals and groups concerning substance abuse and other related issues.
  • Provide referrals for identified needs of the client that cannot be met by the Agency.
  • Document in a client’s chart the results of the assessment, treatment plan, reports, progress notes, discharge summaries and other client-related data.
  • Consult with in-house staff and other outside professionals to assure comprehensive, quality care for the client.
  • Provide information to Third Party payers as needed.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

 

  • Monitor urinalysis collection.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

 

Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field; experience with counseling or related human service activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

 

Knowledge of different approaches to counseling.

 

Knowledge of human behavior and performance for the assessment and treatment of substance abuse disorders Specific knowledge necessary for working with special populations (i.e., adolescent developmental issues).

Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of substance abuse including pharmacological factors.

 

Knowledge of the American Society of Addiction Medicine placement criteria and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual as it relates to substance-related disorders or able to acquire the knowledge.

 

Knowledge of the Code of Ethics for substance abuse counselors.

 

Knowledge of the federal drug and alcohol confidentiality law (42 C.F.R. Part 2) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

 

Ability to work with a diverse population.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

 

Ability to work a varied schedule to include some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other outside professionals and the general public.

 

Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with or without reasonable accommodation where applicable.

 

Skills in the operations of computer word processing applications.

 

NECESSARY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

 

Counselor Certification through the State of Iowa or Illinois within the first two years of employment.
