Overview

Under the direction of the Respiratory Therapy Manager, the general supervision of the Lead person, and with the guidance of the Medical Director, the individual will be required to perform Respiratory Therapy Service modalities as ordered by physician to in-patients and out-patients throughout the Trinity Medical Center facility.

 

Responsibilities

 

TECHNICAL/ADMINISTRATIVE/CLINICAL: Demonstrates competence in the skills, (processes, procedures, and equipment) necessary to carry out assigned duties as identified below. Demonstrated competence in recognizing and responding to patients physical, mental, emotional and developmental needs should be evaluated in relation to the patient populations served as appropriate for each responsibility.

  • Performs all prescribed Respiratory Care therapeutic procedures.
  • Demonstrates competence in the administration of age.
  • Performs treatments timely and according to departmental procedure.
  • Charts all therapy rendered per documentation policy and charges appropriately.
  • Assesses patients for initiation and/or changes in patient care.
  • Initiates and discontinues therapy and/or associated equipment.
  • Performs prescribed Respiratory Care diagnostic and rehabilitation procedures (Advanced DX; P.O. Screening, EKG, O2 Xcise testing, other tests as assigned).
  • Follows established protocol.
  • Prepares equipment and patient for proper test results.
  • Completes required calculations for reports.
  • Copies and distributes all reports.
  • Arterial Puncture.
  • Responds to and competently performs as a member of the Code Blue Team.
  • Ensures and maintains airway patency of CPR patients.
  • Adequately ventilates CPR patients.
  • Ensures replacement of all airway equipment used during code.
  • Endotracheal intubation upon completion of competency.
  • Maintains ACLS and NRP certification, as assigned by manager or designate.
  • Competently performs intensive Respiratory Care - Prepares and sets up adult and infant vents.
  • Ensures proper intensive Respiratory Care monitoring.
  • Monitors vents. Suctions and maintains artificial airways.
  • Assesses vent patients.
  • Provides record of vent monitoring information.
  • Assists physician with performance of invasive procedure (i.e. Bronchoscopy).
  • Performs all related and delegated work assignments.
  • Completes Quality Assurance as assigned.
  • Provides pertinent and accurate information for record keeping, department charges, and inventory.
  • Accepts duties and tasks assigned by manager or lead. Develops patient and employee education sessions and assists with evaluations as needed/requested Instructs home care patients, inpatients, and outpatients.
  • Assists with community training/instruction programs.
  • Preceptor to new employees of department and gives instructionto supportive departments and personnel.
  • Provides input into performance evaluation upon request from manager or lead.
  • Develops and presents departmental in-service education programs.Supervision - Supervises Respiratory Therapy staff as assigned.
  • Assists in training of Respiratory Therapy Students and completes associated paperwork competencies / training.
  • Administrative - Accepts role/responsibility for operation of department as delegated by manager or lead.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set measurable goals to improve performance as Tech IV and to accomplish those goals.

 

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a CoARC approved Respiratory Care Program and registered (RRT) or considered registry-eligible by the NBRC. Employees are required to go through a 3 to 6 week orientation, depending on level of experience for proper orientation to departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS: Must be familiar with and demonstrate competency on Humidifiers, O2 therapy related equipment, aerosols, and pulse oximetry. Nebulizers, inhalers, and applicable medications. Mechanical percussors, bedside pulmonary screeners, EKG's, and volume expansion therapy. Emergency airway equipment, Arterial blood gases and trach changes, Adult ventilators (both invasive and non-invasive). Ability to serve in the charge therapist role as needed. Serve as a clinical preceptor to students Equipment and therapies associated with the care of the neonatal population. Ability to accept assignments at the Moline and Bettendorf Campuses. Intubation (not required, but within the scope of practice). Individuals should be able to accept and perform new responsibilities assigned to the Respiratory Therapy Department, have knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology and other sciences relating to Respiratory Care, and be able to perform Respiratory Care with a high sense of responsibility and accuracy. Must exhibit mature judgment, honesty, and integrity. Tact, good judgment, verbal ability, and a positive attitude are very important attributes when dealing with patients, patient's families, physicians, nurses, and other hospital employees.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS: Iowa licensure must be obtained within 1 month from date of hire. Illinois licensure – must provide proof of completed and submitted application within the first week of employment. Certifications include CPR upon hire and ACLS / NRP within 6 months from date of hire. Registrations - All employees will have 6 months from date of hire to obtain their RRT credential. If testing attempted but not passed by the 6 month deadline, therapist may remain employed provided they provide proof of re-attempt of test every 3 months. Employees who fail to pass necessary testing within a 2 year time frame will fail to meet this requirement.
