Overview

Provides addictions education and direct counseling service to patients and their families participating in New Horizons Outpatient Treatment Program. Activities include assessment, treatment planning, group facilitation, individual counseling and crisis intervention.     

Responsibilities

 

Key Accountability

  • Provision of direct service (includes assessment, treatment planning, providing individual counseling, facilitating group therapy, crisis intervention)
  • Documentation (maintaining accurate client record reflecting care)
  • Referral and case management (facilitating referrals for additional services, participation in team meetings, coordinating care with community resources)

  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

 

Qualifications

 

 

Education:

  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in a related field with a minimum of six months substance abuse experience OR
  • Has satisfactorily completed an accredited substance abuse counselor training program and a minimum of two years relevant supervised work experience including at least one year supervised substance abuse experience

Experience:

  • 6 months

License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all core counselor functions according to Iowa Board of Certification.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels.
  • Ability to handle stress, new ideas and changes objectively without undue resistance or reaction.
  • Excellent knowledge of addiction and interventions to assist clients to make behavioral change.

Other:

  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
