Overview

The Nutrition Services Assistant (NSA) is responsible for assisting patients in making meal selections that meet their nutrition care orders. The NSA follows customer service and infection prevention guidelines to maintain high patient satisfaction while delivering timely, efficient and accurate meals, nourishments, and enteral feedings. The NSA uses the hospital and Dining Service computer system along with a handheld computer to generate meal tray tickets and menus.

Responsibilities

  • Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospitals commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
  • Completes menu selection and modification according to patient nutrition care order to ensure that patients receive appropriate menus and foods according to the department guidelines using the CBORD Nutrition Service Suite computer software.
  • Serves customers assuring prompt, efficient food service according to menu guidelines, customer service standards and infection prevention protocols. Assists patients with meal set-up wherever needed. In OB, sets up the serving area for customers to serve themselves. For other patients, delivers meal trays in a timely and accurate manner. Uses the AIDET customer service process when working with patients and families.
  • Works collaboratively with patients and families, production and trayline staff and dietitians to understand customer service expectations and ensure that timely and quality services are provided. Provides Service Recovery when necessary.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the continuous monitoring of all operational concerns of the Diet Office and OB Nourishment Center, including process reviews, maintaining inventory; and monitoring equipment, food quality, appearance and acceptance.
  • Follows department procedures for handling cash and recordkeeping when processing guest trays.
  • Follows safe food handling and sanitation practices. This includes monitoring for safe food and equipment temperatures; using the approved HACCP process for preparing tube feedings; adhering to department guidelines regarding uniforms, hair restraints and proper hygiene; and not working when ill.
  • Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of Dining Services functions and policies.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and attainment of department goals, policies, and projects to improve quality, availability and accessibility of services and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulatory guidelines.
  • Attends in-services, on the job training, and continuing education programs and participates in competency assessment to current with the position expectations.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school graduation or equivalent. Associate Degree as a Dietary Technician or Food Service Management preferred.
  • Qualifications/Experience: Minimum of 3-6 months of healthcare institution experience preferred. Must possess excellent communication skills including effective communication over the telephone. Must read, write, and speak fluent English.
