Overview

Registered Nurse (RN) for Emergency Department.

 

Position will be Part Time: 20 hours per week.

Shifts: Primarily 1900-0300.  Will include weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assesses and monitors total physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs of patients of all ages.
  2. With guidance from/collaboration with other health team members, develops and maintains with the patient/significant other, an individualized, professional approach to patient care reflective of changing needs/goals as determined by evaluating the patient/significant other response.
  3. Provides nursing care in accordance with nursing standards.
  4. Assesses and plans for discharge needs, evaluates patients and significant others educational needs and initiates and implements appropriate teaching or makes appropriate referrals.
  5. Documents nursing care consistent with documentation guidelines.
  6. Communicates with other members of the healthcare team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
  7. Participates in unit operations demonstrating professional behaviors to include supporting goals of Nursing unit and maintaining awareness of resource utilization.
  8. Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, performance improvement activities, standards development and review, hospital/nursing committees and other related activities.
  9. Demonstrates positive customer relation skills.
  10. Participates in discharge phone calls and documents in record
  11. Participates in assigned department performance improvement initiatives.
  12. Adheres to all department and hospital policies

Triage Responsibilities (if assigned)

    • Assures patients are acknowledged upon arrival, and triaged expeditiously
    • Completes triage within 5 minutes including:
    • Chief Complaint
    • Vital Signs, to include weights on pediatric patients
    • Initiates ASAP ED Chart
    • Identifies the components of the rapid triage assessment of adults/adolescents/pediatrics
    • Accurately assigns the Emergency Severity Index (ESI)
    • Makes a triage category determination based on chief complaint and nursing judgment
    • Practices immediate bedding process when beds are available
    • Implements ED Triage protocols if indicated when immediate bedding is unavailable.
    • Responsible for patients in the waiting room. Rounds and reassesses ED patients per policy.   Documents reassessment in ASAP. Appropriately notifies charge nurse of issues and requests support when needed
    • Reassess patients waiting and initiates/documents essential triage to include but not limited to:
      • Arrival Info
      • Work related
    • Allergies
    • Medications
    • Screening questions (e.g. sepsis, domestic violence, fall, advanced directives)
    • OB/Gyn Status
    • Destination

     

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:                   Bachelors in Nursing preferred. Refer to Voluntary BSN Agreement form. Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing required.

 

Licensure:                   Current RN Licensure in state of Iowa or applicable compact state.   Must be licensed in state of residence

 

Experience:                 None

 

Skills/Abilities:            

Ability to delegate wisely, exercise good judgment, maintain positive interpersonal relationships, adapt to change, evaluate critically and think creatively. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required for specialized area of assignment. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care appropriate to patients of all ages.   Must demonstrate effective communication skills.

 

Triage skills (if assigned)

Diverse knowledge base, strong interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, strong critical thinking skills, ability to conduct a brief and focused interview, strong physical assessment skills, ability to make rapid and accurate decisions, ability to multitask yet focus, ability to provide patient education throughout triage process, ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members, ability to work under periods of intense stress, ability to appropriately delegate responsibilities, ability to adjust to fluctuations in workload, ability to communicate understanding of patient and family, and understanding of cultural and religious concerns that may occur. Strong service excellence skills.

 

Certifications: Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC). Completion of hospital-approved Critical Care course within one year of employment.

 

ED RNs are a member of the Primary Stroke team and require 4 hours of annual stroke education.
