Responsibilities

  • Accepts and responds to work requests for general maintenance and repair of closures, mobile equipment, installed facility systems, various piping systems, minor plumbing, minor electrical, move requests, simple temperature complaints, and other assignments from management  
  • Repairs and maintains facility equipment such as beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, kitchen appliances, exercise equipment, nurse call and other communication systems, as assigned  
  • Performs minor carpentry, painting, plastering, and electromechanical repairs; performs repairs and preventive maintenance on pneumatic tube systems and medical gas outlets  
  • Ensures urgent requests are handled timely and that repairs are made correctly and completely while maintaining positive relationships and communications with patients, visitors, and staff  
  • Keeps shops and mechanical rooms clean and free of unnecessary items; observes accepted procedures in the care and use of equipment and tools  
  • Cooperates with supervisors and coworkers to maintain equipment, parts, and supplies, and makes recommendations regarding desired changes in operation and maintenance procedures  
  • Performs preventive maintenance orders for facility departments to ensure compliance with healthcare standards; updates and creates preventive maintenance schedules as equipment is installed  
  • Inspects and initiates repairs to life safety equipment and systems including fire doors, fire/smoke walls, fire barriers, medical gas systems, egress and emergency lighting, fire sprinkler and suppression systems, and fire alarm systems  
  • Understands, observes, and complies with all safety precautions and procedures; performs assigned duties during internal and external disasters, codes, and drills  
  • Completes regulatory reports related to life safety equipment and systems and conducts Infection Control Risk Assessments, obtaining permits as required for work in patient areas  
  • Utilizes logs and maintains documentation required in accordance with standard operating procedures and applicable authorities having jurisdiction 
  • Records time, date, labor, and materials expended on jobs and maintains files of pertinent records on machinery and equipment in the work order maintenance system  
  • Communicates with supervisors and coworkers to achieve understanding in a positive manner; balances team and individual responsibilities, gives and welcomes feedback, and contributes to positive team goals. 
  • Participates in department training groups and attends and teaches training subjects in formal, informal, computerbased, and onthejob settings; keeps informed through training and other sources to further job knowledge  
  • Suggests improvements to equipment or management policies to supervisors; displays initiative and judgment in determining the extent of repairs and selecting appropriate materials, methods, and techniques  
  • Maintains responsibility and accountability for knowledge of conditions of assigned mechanical equipment and assumes responsibility for timely completion of job responsibilities  

Qualifications

Education: 

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent job experience required. 
  • Associate’s degree in industrial technologies or a related skilled trade (e.g., HVAC, electrical, electronics, mechanical); completion of a trade/technical school program or trade apprenticeship is preferred. 

Experience: 

  • Five (5) years’ experience in operations, including maintenance and/or repair, with familiarity with mechanical systems and building maintenance techniques for systems and equipment required 
  • Two (2) years safety systems/low voltage field experience preferred.  
  • Four (4) years of healthcare/hospital maintenance experience preferred. 
  • Five (5) years of maintenance experience in a commercial setting preferred.  

License(s)/Certification(s): 

  • Valid Driver’s License required 
  • Certification in Low Voltage Systems issued by NICET preferred.
