The Director is responsible for the effective operation and oversight of laboratory services delivered in the markets. As a member of the local markets operations team, the Director will lead the assigned clinical department(s) and the team’s commitment to UPH quality, service, safety, strategy, and fiscal accountability. The Director works under the guidance of the Enterprise senior leadership for the Laboratory in partnership with local market leadership and develops and leads a team of high-performing managers and supervisors. The Director assumes responsibility for implementation of new programs, identifying opportunities of growth, guiding the development of patient centered services, and ensures meeting the standards in quality per accreditation or other governing bodies. They will be a liaison for the system-wide clinical department amongst all healthcare providers, partners, and students affiliated with the system. The Director works collaboratively with other clinical departments to support UPH initiatives and identify system sustainability and best practices. They promote a culture which encourages staff to develop new skills to advance the clinical department as well as themselves and provides an environment that promotes trust and decision-making at the staff level.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

People Leadership: 

  • Serves as the key business leader for the market team; is seen as the subject matter expert and responsible for the development of partnerships and purposeful connections with team members, leaders, other departments, and external partners.
  • Leads team through influence and presence by making purposeful connections, motivating, mentoring, coaching, and providing guidance to the team to deliver high-quality, cost-effective services. Facilitates the ongoing learning, well-being, professional satisfaction, and development of staff through training, work assignments, increased responsibility, mentoring, and the performance evaluation process.
  • Provide direction, supervision, and support to team members. Delegates accountability and responsibility appropriately to the leadership team.
  • Ensures effective recruitment, selection, supervision, and retention of direct reports and departments reporting to the Director.
  • Directors who support multiple markets will be onsite a minimum of two times per month in their non-home market(s) for purposeful rounding.  Exceptions to this are acceptable pending mutual agreement with system and market leadership.
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals for assigned team members.
  • Develop and maintain communication to establish regular and consistent communication with team members, leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Share concerns and/or escalate issues to leadership and key stakeholders as appropriate

Operations:

  • Serves as the key leader and role model; balances team and individual responsibilities; performs all duties of a director.
  • Serves as the administrative leader and liaison with all clinical department physicians, physician partners, and activities; assists with the contract preparation, negotiation, and execution of pathologist agreements and execution of market-specific agreements where applicable; serves as the administrative representative to Medical Staff departments, sections, committees.
  • Employs system thinking in decision-making, directs resolution of complex problems, and provides consultation and advice.
  • Oversees daily operations to ensure delivery of high-quality services and support. Provides ongoing monitoring and oversight to annually assess effectiveness of department and organizational outcomes.
  • Develops, reviews, and ensures departmental policies and procedures and job descriptions are current.

Quality:

  • Leads customer service and quality initiatives; evaluates outcomes and data to continuously improve operational processes, procedures & systems; integrates appropriate technology.
  • Establishes efficient, ongoing training and development programs ensuring compliance with regulatory/accreditation, and meeting quality, and safety.
  • Ensures processes align with Governing bodies and National Association accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents, and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Identification, investigation, and escalation of opportunities to improve in Quality Assurance via department key process indicators, event reporting trends, and huddle discussion opportunities.
  • Creates, advises, reviews and/or monitors metrics, data, and trends for the organization related to the assigned markets. 

Finance:

  • Develops the annual budget and leads fiscal reviews of internal resources to promote an efficient and effective environment for all areas of responsibility.
  • Establishes efficient, ongoing monitoring systems including capital, operating expenses, staffing, productivity, equipment, tests, procedures/policies, information systems, and fiscal requirements.

Strategy:

  • Develops and implements specific operational goals and objectives on an annual basis in support of the UPH strategic plan and in concert with the overall enterprise clinical department plan for Imaging services.
  • Works across markets to identify and leverage resources, best practices, and standardization efforts across the system.

 

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in healthcare or related field preferred. Bacherlor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Science or related field required.
  • Experience: Three to five years progressive leadership experience. Five years clinical laboratory experience required. Director level leadership experience is preferred.
  • License(s)/Certification(s): Phlebotomy certification, Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP), Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) preferred.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English
  • Other: Must be able to operate utilize laboratory, analytical, processing, and personal computer equipment.
