Overview

We are hiring a Director - IT Project Management Office (PMO)! This role  leads the planning, coordination, and delivery of high-impact IT projects and programs across the enterprise. This role ensures consistent project management practices by establishing and maintaining standardized approaches, methodologies, and toolsets that enable efficient and repeatable project execution. The Director partners closely with the Sr. Director Managed Service Office for resource and financial accountability, collaborates with the Managed Service Provider (MSP), and is responsible for the tools and processes used by the IT PMO. The Director oversees a team of Portfolio Managers and the Manager, Project Management, fostering a high-performing, service-oriented environment that supports strategic and operational priorities.

 

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

Location: Remote - applicants must reside within the UPH footprint of Iowa, Illinois, or Wisconsin

Responsibilities

Portfolio Management & Strategic Alignment:

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of a portfolio of IT projects, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, timelines, and budgets. 
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to evaluate and scope new project and program requests, aligning with strategic goals. 
  • Track and report on portfolio, program, and project performance, including timelines, milestones, and resource utilization; escalate risks or issues as needed. 
  • Collaborate with system leaders and the Sr. Director Managed Service Office to facilitate prioritization of resource requests and staffing plans. 
  • Partner with Finance to monitor project budgets, establish financial targets, define success metrics, and project capital. 
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, and ISO/NIST standards.

 

Project Management Standards & Tools:

  • Maintain and evolve standardized project management methodologies, tools, and templates to promote consistency and efficiency across teams. 
  • Ensure standard approaches allow for aggregated views into programs and the entirety of the portfolio. 
  • Evaluate, implement, and maintain PMO tools that provide real-time evaluation of statuses, timelines, and resourcing for tasks, projects, and programs. 
  • Support cross-functional coordination and communication during project planning and execution, including collaboration with the MSP and other IT partners. 

 

Team Leadership & Talent Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Portfolio Managers and the Manager, Project Management. 
  • Foster a culture centered on accountability, continuous improvement, and high-touch service—ensuring project support reduces the burden on leaders and enables focus on strategic priorities. 
  • Build project management capability across the organization through training, mentoring, and performance management. 
  • Responsible for recruitment of top talent and meeting program needs with a customer-focused mentality. 
  • Implement effective performance management and staff development processes. 
  • Establish effective mechanisms of communication with staff and key stakeholders to foster an environment of openness, trust, and teamwork. 

 

Financial & Resource Accountability:

  • Partner with the Sr. Director Managed Service Office for resource supply, utilization planning, and financial accountability. 
  • Coordinate capital and expense budgets along with resource allocation. 
  • Provide fiscal and contract management; prepare annual operations plans for the PMO and contribute to overall IT operations planning. 
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget utilizing project management best practices. 
  • Review department operations to validate resource levels and funding are appropriate. 
  • Implement standards and practices that encourage effective resource utilization. 

 

Process Improvement & Compliance:

  • Develop, document, and maintain policies and procedures for the PMO; ensure procedures are followed and updated as needed.
  • Actively participate in operational improvement efforts for IT and the health system. 
  • Identify and address process gaps; ensure processes are documented and followed. 
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws or regulations, and prepare for voluntary accreditation as accepted by healthcare organizations. 
  • Maintain appropriate vendor relations per policies and procedures related to vendor management.

 

Customer Service & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Balance and support strategic direction with the specific business and information systems needs of internal clients. 
  • Communicate effectively with internal clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions and strategies. 
  • Collaborate with the UnityPoint Health Management team and MSP to ensure customer project and portfolio management needs are met. 
  • Responsible for adherence to Service Level Agreements and ensuring services are provided as per established service levels. 
  • Advise and communicate with all levels of management and end users concerning PMO services, capabilities, and standards. 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Health Science, Project Management, or related field. 

Experience:

  • Required: At least five years of experience in a management-level position, preferably in technology or healthcare environments.
  • Required: Experience managing a team of direct reports, including Portfolio Managers and Project Managers. 
  • Required: Experience with project management methodologies, tools, and software (e.g., Microsoft Office, SharePoint, ServiceNow SPM). 
  • Proven experience in healthcare IT environments or with healthcare clients. 
  • Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills  
  • Required: Project Management Professional Certification 

Licenses:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP Certification)
