The Computed Tomography Technologist I performs diagnostic Computed Tomography and X-ray exams (based on department needs) under the direction of a radiologist The Computed Tomography Technologist I provides compassionate direct patient care with an emphasis on maintaining organizational values and standards of behavior. The Computed Tomography Technologist I operates diagnostic CT and X-Ray (as appropriate) equipment to produce diagnostic images of designated portions of the body to meet the national standards fordose reduction and assists radiologists and/or physicians in the administration of contrast media and other medications as required. The Computed Tomography Technologist I is required to participate in an on-call rotation outside of business hours based on department needs and must be able to work some weekends and holidays.
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
• Completes a variety of high quality, patient-centered diagnostic exams on all age ranges (neonatal – elderly) and in varying locations throughout the hospital, in CT and X-ray (based on department needs) in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.
• Completes complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of CT scanners and related equipment in accordance with the prescribed radiation safety procedures. Positions patients for CT scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary.
• Safely administers IV contrast using apprpriately sized catheter/needle to deliver proper/safe volume of contrast for specific vascular protocols using pressure injector followed by flushing agents to central venous catheters utilizing sterile technique.
• Assesses and monitors patient for allergic reaction to contrast material.
• Performs quality control (QC) procedures in compliance with manufacturer and regulatory requirements independently, ensuring proper functioning of equipment and image quality.
• Troubleshoots equipment issues and errors and reports safety concerns and malfunctions promptly.
• Cleans departmental equipment and verifies all safety/health regulations and policies are met.
• Assists in the training and clinical instruction of students.
Departmental Support
• Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies and projects.
• Maintains an adequate level of productivity.
• Communicates with departmental management team as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise and documents as necessary.
• Communicates effectively inter- and intra-departmentally with other healthcare professionals and customers to provide accurate, timely information and to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.
• Teaches, orients, and mentors staff in assigned technical area to assure a smooth functioning, high quality operation.
• Orders and assures adequate supplies are available and utilized in a cost-effective manner.
• Maintains cleanliness of equipment and workspace and reports equipment malfunctions in a timely manner.
Regulatory Compliance
• Maintains compliance and is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations, and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (i.e., IDPH, ACR, TJC, DNV).
• Understands and adheres to all safety practices (ALARA) while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to unnecessary ionizing radiation.
• Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the overall departmental functions, policies, and procedures.
Education
Graduate from an approved Radiologic Technology Program
License/Certifications
RTR Registered as Radiologic Technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT)
RTCT Registered as CT Technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT)
RTIA, RTIL, RTWI-WIDSPS -Permit to Practice in the state that team member will be preforming Radiological Exams
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other
In-depth knowledge of adult, pediatric, neonatal, and fetal physiology and anatomy.
