Overview

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) provides support to the Director and Managers within the division, as well as across patient care services. They assist, coordinate, and influence nursing practice excellence in the patient care area. The APN acts as a resource person for patient care team members and works cooperatively within the hospital community to coordinate nursing policy and education of staff, maintain standards of care, and performance improvement consistent with and under the direction of the established strategic plan, goals, and objectives for Patient Care Services.

Division Specific Position Details: May be scheduled in patient care one shift per week

Responsibilities

Leadership

·        Demonstrates clinical leadership as a role model for team members.

·        Consults nursing management regarding issues or barriers in delivery of care, staff achievement of competency, system concerns, provider concerns or specific patient care barriers.

·        Participates in divisional and hospital shared governance infrastructure.

·        Coordinate and lead hospital-wide patient initiatives as assigned by Director

Clinical Excellence

·        Maintains current knowledge of trends and advances in nursing practice.

·        Facilitates development, implementation, and evaluation of changes in patient care based on published evidence.

·        Assists with formulation of evidence-based nursing policy and procedure.

·        Partners with providers and patient care team members to achieve patient care outcomes.

Education

·        Serves as a resource to patient care team members based on professional standards of care.

·        Provides support and resources to the division for on-boarding of new patient care team members.

·        Supports competency development and implementation within the division for patient care team members.

Quality Improvement

·        Identifies pertinent research, EBP, and/or PI questions arising from clinical practice.

·        Assists with formulation of evidence-based nursing policy and procedure.

·        Reports research, EBP and/or PI findings to appropriate stakeholders.

·        Supports performance improvement initiatives within the division.

·        Mentors staff on improvement process and implementation principles.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria        

·        Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

·        Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

·        Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

·        Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

·        Responds to clinical needs/cares during times of surge as determined by CNE and nursing leadership. 

·        Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

·        Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse.  Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

  • Education:

     

     

     

    ·        Completion of an accredited nursing program

    ·        Master’s degree in nursing or healthcare-related field

     

    Experience:

     

     

     

     

    ·       Three years of clinical experience

     

                                 

    ·     Three years of leadership experience with evidence of successful change management.

    License(s)/Certification(s):

     

     

     

     

    ·       Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or compact state

    ·       Current BLS certification

    ·       Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons

    ·     Specialty certification

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

     

     

     

     

    ·        Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
