Executive Director, Market Finance Operations

Location: Des Moines, IA

UnityPoint Health – Des Moines is seeking a dynamic and strategic Executive Director (ED) of Market Finance Operations to serve as a key advisor to senior leadership and oversee the financial performance of all entities within the Central Iowa Health System (CIHS / UPH‑DM).

Reporting directly to the Des Moines Market CFO, this leader will play a critical role in driving financial strategy, operational performance, and long‑term sustainability across the market. The Executive Director will partner closely with Affiliate, Market, and System leadership to align financial planning, forecasting, and performance improvement initiatives with organizational goals.

Responsibilities

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial leadership and advisory support to the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines senior leadership team.
  • Lead market‑wide financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, productivity management, and overall financial operations.
  • Develop, implement, and execute financial strategies, systems, and processes that optimize current and future operational performance.
  • Analyze operating results and identify opportunities for revenue optimization, expense management, and capital stewardship.
  • Oversee, direct, and organize the work of the market finance team, fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Direct the preparation of short‑ and long‑range financial plans and budgets aligned with corporate goals and growth objectives.
  • Support development and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets, ensuring progress toward established performance targets.
  • Coordinate financial analysis and reporting for business plans in partnership with leaders across the market.
  • Ensure integration of financial planning tools across strategic, operational, quality, and performance management processes.
  • Serve as a trusted market consultant on finance‑related and day‑to‑day operational issues, escalating material risks or performance concerns to senior leadership as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Affiliate, Market, and System leaders to identify and execute financial performance improvement initiatives that support strategic positioning and long‑term success.

 

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or business required. Masters degree (MHSA, MBA, MHA) preferred

Experience: Five years of progressive financial leadership experience in highly matrixed health system.
