Overview

The Clinical Informatics Specialist is responsible for the analysis, planning, implementation, on-going support and evaluation of clinical information systems that impact team members in the hospital, hospital out-patient clinics and provider offices.  Concentrated effort will be given to the process of training providers and clinical staff.  Responsibilities include representing the UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital team/departments on the UnityPoint Health work groups.  The Clinical Informatics Specialist is a change agent working with the providers and other clinical specialties in the design, training and implementation phases of projects, as well as ensuring that appropriate procedures and processes are developed for sustaining the application of new systems and projects.

Responsibilities

Coordinates all aspects of EMR practices with clinical providers and IT.

·         Researches, evaluates and makes recommendations on the need for new information systems or system enhancements with providers, patient care department end users, IT, vendors and management team.  This is done by evaluating existing operations and systems, keeping in mind potential volumes, data flow, constraints, documentation, and impacts to patient care end users.

·         Requests and reviews information from IT/vendors related to new systems or system enhancements with providers, patient care department end users, and management.

·         Ensures that clinical information systems are in compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS and other regulatory standards.

·         Responsible for the day to day upkeep of various systems and the interfaces between them.  This includes, but not limited to, remote access applications for physicians and physician staff utilization.

·         Coordinates implementation of new documentation practices or updates on documentation practices, identifying policy changes associated with implementing.

·         Applies broad clinical and systems knowledge in practice management, health information management, and clinical workflows to develop systems tools, workflows and reports to optimize system use.

·         Utilize research findings to improve patient outcomes using clinical information system applications.

·         Participates on the Hospital Chart Correction team.

·         Provides support at go-live for clinics, hospital departments as they transition to new documentation practices or as they join UnityPoint Health.

·         Follows through with end-user concerns/issues in a timely manner

Leads and coordinates all new system enhancements and requests for optimization impacting the EMR.

 

·         Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the end-user environment (provider and clinical staff) and systems and proactively seeks methods of improvement.

·         Demonstrates creativity and independent thinking in development of alternative designs to achieve new objectives.  Recognizes when the involvement of others is necessary.

Facilitates education/in-services related to the EMR.

·         Facilitates education/in-services related to implementation of changes in clinical information system applications.

·         Participates in shared governance and performance improvement activities at the department and/or organizational level.

·         Serves as a credential trainer in the EMR system and assists with training of the providers and clinical staff members.  Must complete training courses to be become an Epic Certified Trainer within 6 months of hire.

·         Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse.  Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

·         Bachelor Degree

·         Master’s Degree

Experience:

 

 

 

 

·         Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in inpatient/provider setting with clinical expertise. (I.e. Nursing or other Healthcare Profession.

·         Information Technology experience.

·         Use of Epic’s EMR as an end-user or certified trainer. 

License(s)/Certification(s):

 

 

 

·         Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
