Our Clinical Staff Educator acts in the role of educator for new staff. The educator will also implement new ideas and best practices in the nursing areas while demonstrating excellent teaching and collaboration skills with all disciplines in providing expert nursing skills to patients and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competence in the skills, (processes, procedures, and equipment) necessary to carry out assigned duties as identified below. Demonstrated competence in recognizing and responding to patients physical, mental, emotional, and developmental needs should be evaluated in relation to the patient populations served as appropriate for each responsibility.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Performs prescribed Unit Safety Checks.
  • Interprets physician's orders.
  • Assists with patient procedures, admissions, discharges and transfers.
  • Provides patient/family education.
  • Responds to Rapid Response Codes, Code Blues’, on and of unit.
  • Monitors patient sensitive indicators (real time) and collaborates with manager/director for unit improvements.
  • Assures availability of equipment and supplies.
  • Reports equipment problems or malfunctions.
  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Must have completed an accredited nursing program and possess a valid nursing license for the state of Iowa.

Experience: 

  • 3 years of clinical specialty and proven teaching expertise with hospital experience or a proven history of positive leadership skills in an active hospital leadership or Lead Nurse role.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Completed Basic Certified Life Support certification prior to hire, (ACLS) certification or obtain within six (6) months from hire. Unit specific additional functions will be addressed in the competency checklist specific to the assigned unit. Additional certifications and requirements are unit based. MOAB within 6 months from date of hire and maintain.  Must obtain NIHSS within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter. Completion of eight hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually. 

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals. 
  • Must be able to meet the competency of unit assigned to and also be able to successfully complete orientation.
  • Ability to move and lift patients and use appropriate equipment.
  • Must legally perform the essential functions of the job in accordance with the nurse practice act, able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies to include medication administration and nursing competencies.
  • Ability to document information accurately.
  • Effective interpersonal relationships and communication skills (verbal, non-verbal and written).
  • Able to read, write, comprehend and speak English.
