Overview

The President, Behavioral Health | AbbeHealth provides strategic and operational leadership for all behavioral health programs, including inpatient behavioral health units, outpatient services, integrated behavioral health, psychiatric emergency services, substance use disorder programs, and telehealth initiatives. The President ensures these services operate cohesively across the continuum, achieving alignment with organizational goals, maintaining regulatory compliance, and delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. 

 

The President, Behavioral Health | AbbeHealth will champion initiatives that enhance access, quality, safety, and financial performance while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. This role ensures that behavioral health operations are fully aligned with UnityPoint Health’s system-wide strategic priorities and annual operating plans, driving performance against key metrics and supporting continuous improvement across all service areas.  In partnership with the Market President, they will coordinate care delivery, elevate quality outcomes, and strengthen access to behavioral health services.  The role will also lead efforts to reduce duplication, optimize resources, and manage expenses to better serve our patients, families, and communities. 

 

The President, Behavioral Health | AbbeHealth is under the direct supervision of UnityPoint Health’s Market President – Cedar Rapids and collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer to support program/practice changes to continually improve resource utilization.

Responsibilities

Strategy, Leadership & Performance Execution

  • Provide visionary leadership for all behavioral health servicesfostering a culture grounded in qualitysafetyaccountabilityand operational excellence. 
  • Develop and execute strategic plans aligned with UnityPoint Health’s missionsystem prioritiesand annual operating goals. 
  • Serve as a transformational change agentguiding teams through organizational transitions and aligning objectives with UnityPoint Health strategic priorities. 
  • Mentorcoachand develop leaders across all behavioral health service lines to ensure robust succession planningleadership readinessand long-term continuity. 
  • Champion innovation and evidence-based practices to advance the effectiveness and sustainability of behavioral health programs. 
  • Ensure sound governance through collaborative relationships with the AbbeHealth and Affiliate Boards of Directorsaligning decisions with Market and UPH system-wide goals. 
  • Drive leadership accountability to ensure teams operationalize and deliver on strategic and operational plans. 
  • Advance population health initiatives by aligning behavioral health strategies with payer requirementsvalue-based care modelsand emerging trends. 
  • Monitor key performance indicatorsevaluate progressand refine strategies to achieve optimal clinicaloperationaland financial outcomes. 
  • Implement strategies to maximize operational efficiencyvalueand cost-effectiveness across all Behavioral Health Services. 
  • Oversee financial performance against budgetsensuring leaders are accountable for achieving goals. 
  • Analyze resultsidentify variancesand implement corrective actions to optimize performance. 
  • Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgetsaligning with UPH’s financial targets and strategic priorities. 
  • Lead growth strategiescommunity partnershipsand pursue grant opportunities to expand services and ensure sustainability. 

Quality, Safety & Patient Experience

  • Champion high-quality, patient-centered care and service excellence, fulfilling UPH’s brand promise to communities. 
  • Ensure top performance in quality outcomes and patient experience, driving sustained improvement initiatives. 
  • Monitor performance against clinical standards, policies, and quality targets, correcting variances promptly. 
  • Engage team members to enhance patient experience and foster a culture of empathy, responsiveness, and continuous improvement. 
  • Ensure full compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards, including CMS, DNV, CARF, and other governing bodies. 

 

TalentCulture & Community Engagement 

  • Role model UPH’s FOCUS valuesstrengthening culture to positively impact team membersproviderspatientsand communities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, or a related fieldor equivalent professional experience.  Master's degree preferred.
  • Administrative Experience: Minimum of 5 years of post-degree administrative experience in the delivery of healthcare or human services. 
  • Leadership Experience: Minimum of 5 years of upper-level management and supervisory experiencedemonstrating the ability to lead complex teams and programs. 
  • Relationship Management: Proven ability to build and maintain successful relationships with staffproviderscommunity partnersand other stakeholders. 
  • Program and Performance Accountability: Demonstrated success in program delivery with accountability for qualityattention to detailand a strong customer service orientation.
