Overview

The Medical Assistant Lead is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Work Well Clinic lab. The Lead Medical Assistant will participate in medical assistant duties while providing direction and support to fellow medical assistants. The Medical Assistant Lead is a resource to all staff for company representatives for issues concerning drug testing and the Work Well lab functions. Medical Assistants are responsible for conducting drug and alcohol screens and aid in the reporting of results to company representatives. Perform a variety of clinical duties including drug screen collections, venipunctures, finger sticks, respirator fit testing, and operating equipment related to these procedures. Training is provided for drug and alcohol testing and respirator fit testing. Participate in on-call schedule to provide 24/7 drug screening service to client companies. Data entry related to drug screening results, billing and updates to company drug screening programs.

Responsibilities

Lead Role Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Work Well lab by providing daily work assignments, delegation of tasks, and support of lab staff.
  • Creates and maintains lab area daily and on-call schedule.
  • Organizes and schedules onsite drug testing.
  • Maintains strong working relationship with MedTox, Alere, Abbott E-screen and other labs
  • Maintains equipment records and daily data
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment; including recalibration of drug testing equipment (keeping up with the schedule and sending off)
  • Creates policies and procedures related to drug testing or the Work Well lab with approval from the supervisor.
  • Act as a resource to Medical Review Officers (MROs), Designated Employer Representatives (DERs), staff, and others for questions related to drug testing or the Work Well lab.
  • Serves as MROA – Medical Review Officer Assistant, works directly under the medical director to organize and facilitate the drug testing process and any medical or legal issues surrounding drug testing.
  • Plans and organizes training of new collectors.
  • Maintain certifications for Drug Screening and Breath Alcohol testing for department.
  • Compile monthly reports for management team.
  • Assist in management of drug screening random pool/consortium and follow ups for DOT.
  • Assist MROs with drug screen test resulting.
  • Actively involved in quality assurance and process improvement.
  • Serve as the expert for lab audits for WW Lab and Company Audits (FAA, Rockwell, and other companies)
  • Monitor for changes to any regulations that affect drug screening including changes to Iowa Code 730.5 or to the DOT 49 CFR Part 40.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience.
  • Complete drug testing and breath alcohol testing (per guidance of US DOT 49 CFR Part 40) and Medical Review Officer Assistant certification within two (2) months of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as outlined per policy or obtained certification within three (3) month from date of hire.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
