Overview

11AM-11PM

 

The in-hospital paramedic will work assigned shifts in the Emergency Department. During this time the paramedic will be able to function up to their level of certification in the State of Iowa under the direction of Emergency Department Physicians and Registered Nurses, following existing policies and procedures of the Emergency Department as approved by the Emergency Department Medical Director. The paramedic will also function in the pre-hospital environment transporting patients to and from UnityPoint Health following protocols established by Medical Director. The paramedic will also drive ambulance and follow driving policies approved by IDPH.

Responsibilities

Quality/Performance Improvement

  • Supports evidence-based clinical practice and questions the rationale and scientific basis for clinical practice and/or changes in practice.
  • Complies with changes in clinical practice and standards.
  • Participates in data collection when the opportunity is presented.
  • Supports/participates in interpretation of clinical literature and uses to validate and/or change clinical practice.

Communication and Handoffs

  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team members and other customers. Verbal communication is clear and precise.  Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner using approved abbreviations.
  • Computer documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
  • Real-time documentation is utilized.
  • Tools such as SBAR are consistently utilized to assure that critical information is clearly communicated, shared and updated with each handoff.  SBAR handoffs are utilized to communicate patient treatment and assessment information, patient education needs, goals of care and other quality care measures

Leadership.

  • Assists in creating a positive work environment by mentoring of staff/students, and working with team members to develop and facilitate initiatives to strive for positive outcomes in quality and care of patients.
  • Complies with all policies and procedures, and guides team members with compliance.
  • Reliable attendance is an expectation of the team member role.

Qualifications

  • Education:  Current Paramedic Licensure in the State of Iowa required.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years’ experience on a paramedic ground service or related experience.  Certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS according to standards of the American Heart Association obtained withing 90 days of hire.
  • License/Certification: Current Paramedic license in the state of Iowa.
  • Must obtain NIHSS within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter. Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Ability: The paramedic must be able to function in collaboration with the Emergency Department nurse to provide the best medical attention to the patient. Skilled in Arrhythmia interpretation.
  • Other: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to develop/maintain relationships with patients, coworkers and physicians
