Responsibilities

The Specialty Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care within a busy outpatient surgery clinic. This role supports surgeons and advanced practice providers by coordinating patient care, assisting with procedures, and ensuring that patients receive safe and effective pre- and post-operative education. The Specialty RN plays a key role in clinical assessment, care planning, and serving as a resource for patients throughout their surgical journey.

 

Clinical Care & Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, obtain medical histories, and evaluate patient readiness for procedures.

  • Provide pre- and post-operative education to patients and families, including wound care, medication instructions, activity restrictions, and follow-up requirements.

  • Assist surgeons and providers during in-office procedures, ensuring safe sterile and aseptic techniques.

  • Administer medications, injections, and treatments according to provider orders and clinic protocols.

  • Monitor and respond to patient symptoms, concerns, and triage calls using evidence-based nursing judgment.

  • Perform wound assessments, dressing changes, suture/staple removal, and post-op evaluations.

Coordination of Care

  • Collaborate with surgeons, APPs, CMAs, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure quality and continuity of care.

  • Coordinate diagnostic testing, pre-operative clearances, referrals, and follow-up appointments.

  • Support patient safety initiatives and maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (OSHA, CLIA, HIPAA, etc.).

  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Iowa (required).

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program (ADN or BSN; BSN preferred).

  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred or ability to obtain.

  • Previous nursing experience in a specialty clinic, perioperative setting, ambulatory surgery, procedural area, or acute care strongly preferred.

  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
