UnityPoint Health- Des Moines seeks a full-time Genetic Counselor to work with patients and families as part of a multi-disciplinary care team. The genetic counselor will work within an established genetic counseling clinic alongside an experienced genetic counselor and a genetic counseling assistant. Primary service areas include oncology, pediatrics, and perinatal, with opportunities to grow the genetics program into other sub-specialties. The UnityPoint Health- Des Moines Genetics Clinic serves over 1000 new patients and families per year. The genetic counseling clinic primarily serves patients with oncology-related genetics concerns, however counseling for other sub-specialties is also provided.
The Genetic Counselor is a clinical resource to patients and physicians, who provides genetic counseling to individuals and their families who consider themselves at high risk for a genetic disorder. The counselor works with other members of the health care team to ensure patients at high risk for genetic disorders are properly cared for. The genetic counselor effectively works with patients, hospital staff and physicians and demonstrates written and verbal communication skills necessary to conduct education sessions and community education programs, develop policies, procedures and educational materials necessary to fulfill the job responsibility and the ability to perform and/or monitor multiple simultaneous projects. As health care professionals, a genetic counselor interprets and provides clear and comprehensive information about the risk of any medical condition that may have a genetic contribution and ascertains the usefulness of genetic technologies for individuals and families and facilitates an informed decision making process that elicits and respects the spectrum of personal beliefs and values.
EDUCATION: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited program required.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience in genetic counseling is preferred.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS: Certification as a Board Certified Genetic Counsel (CGC) from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required or Active Candidate Status with intent to complete certification within the next available examination cycle.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and web browser. Professionalism and relationship management. Ability to handle multiple interruptions and changing priorities.
The ideal candidate works well with a team, but also has independent critical thinking skills. They are patient-focused and demonstrate compassion and are committed to professional development.
