Overview

2nd Shift; 12:30pm-11:00pm, weekend and holiday rotation

 

Under the direction of the Laboratory Managers and the Lead Technologist, the Technologist (MT/MLS) performs laboratory testing within the established guidelines, policies and procedures of the Laboratory Department and Unitypoint Health Trinity. The Medical Technologist is responsible for adhering to all quality and regulatory guidelines to ensure the highest quality patient care.

Responsibilities

Key Accountability- Technical Performance

  • Provide quality work in Trained/Competency technical areas.
  • Maintains excellent laboratory skills at all times.
  • Performs tests within specified turnaround time.
  • Completes required documentation in MediaLab® of all training and competency work.
  • Complies with methodologies, procedures and services in consultation with the Technical Leadership and Management
  • Documents completely in the performance of technical procedures, including QC, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Completes appropriate training to perform capillary and venous collections from all age groups, including neonates to geriatrics, as needed.
  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient, sample, and aliquot identification and labeling.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs as assigned by area.
  • Attends in-services, on the job training, and continuing education programs to meet developmental needs and keep abreast of new technologies.
  • Makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the overall functions, policies, and procedures of the assigned area to ensure accurate and quality patient care
  • Understands and adheres to all safety practices while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to bio-hazardous material.
  • Communicates with the department leadership as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise and documents appropriately.
  • Communicates effectively inter- and intra-departmentally with other healthcare professionals and customers to provide accurate, timely information and to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.
  • Participates in the training of new team members in the departments they are competent to work
  • Assists the Lead Technologists in recognizing opportunity for improvement Assists the Lead Technologist in training and determining competence of technical staff.

Qualifications

Education: 

Bachelor’s degree in related field or graduate of an accredited Medical Technologist or Medical  Laboratory Scientist program.

 

Certification:

Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or categorical ASCP certification in a laboratory specialty/subspecialty as applicable to job responsibilities. Must be MT or MLS (ASCP) certified or eligible.
