Overview

The Lead RN provides front-line leadership support as part of the unit management team, at a staff level position. The Lead RN supports the Nurse Manager and unit leadership team in their responsibility for the development, implementation and evaluation of care provided on the patient care department, consistent with the established strategic plan, goals and objectives for Patient Care Services. The Lead RN serves as a clinical resource to other healthcare team members in the designated department.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence

  • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice and an expanded knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts.
  • Serves as a resource in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care in the clinical department.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and self-direction in meeting patient and department needs by responding as a team player.
  • Incorporates the St. Luke’s Hospital’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model into their daily nursing practice.

 

Leadership

  • Assists in creating a positive work environment that contributes to safety and positive clinical outcomes.
  • Supports recruitment and retention of staff to assure an adequate workforce for clinical care.
  • Assists in orientation for new staff and student interns by serving as a resource and mentor. Serves in a preceptor role, as appropriate.
  • Participates in department and hospital shared governance infrastructure and performance improvement activities.
  • Follows up on patient concerns in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Notifies Nurse Manager or appropriate designee of any concerns that have the potential to escalate or lead to Risk Management concerns.
  • Maintains concurrent department records/documentation for staff development and competencies, as required.

  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an accredited nursing program
  • Two years of clinical experience in a clinical setting
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or compact state
  • Maintain current BLS certification
  • Writes, reads, speaks, and comprehends fluent English
  • Ability to participate in a multidisciplinary team
  • Must be able to complete basic computer course through in-hospital training; develops and maintains necessary computer skills including Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to perform basic/advanced nursing procedures in the administration of medication therapy and the operation of specialized equipment.
  • Demonstrates skill, organization, and efficiency in performing required patient care activities.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
