Safety Tech/Security Officer I

Shift: PRN as needed

 

 

The Security Officer I/Safety Tech is responsible for providing services that seek to create a safe and secure environment for their assigned departments. Security Officer 1 undertakes activities designed to identify, deter, abate, or correct situations; both routine and emergent that are within the scope of responsibility for the hospital as they occur. Assists with individual needs, assists in maintaining a therapeutic, safe environment; observes, reports, and records patient’s behavior. Provides basic care and oversees the safety and security of patients under the supervision of the medical team. Performs basic assessments. Makes trained observations and reports to the health team or designated member.

Responsibilities

  • De-escalate patients that are behaviorally escalated.
  • Provide appropriate interventions, which may include physical interventions, in a violent situation.
  • Facilitates employee workshops, courses, or training about mental health issues (restraint utilization, MOAB, and de-escalation training).
  • Assist departmental leadership in activities associated with Workplace Violence Initiatives which include follow-up investigations, data gathering, BROSET/Columbia scale utilization, and staying current on applicable best practices.
  • Respond to Security Assistance Needed and Behavioral Health Emergencies by screening patients prior to admission.
  • Provide a safe environment to the patients and departments that are assigned. This may be within a secure unit, an emergency department, and/or an in-patient medical unit. Includes the screening of visitors before entry into behavioral health, patient rooms, and facility for unauthorized and unsafe items that may be harmful to patients, visitors, and team members.
  • Knowledge and ability to speak to the laws surrounding 12-hour Physician holds, 48-hour Holds, Release to Police, Court Committal, Ed Thomas, and court-issued Mental Health Evaluations.
  • Obtains instruction and supervision, as necessary, when implementing new or unfamiliar tasks or duties.
  • Provide personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to patients and their visitors.
  • Develop constructive and cooperative relationships with other staff and departments to help provide the best possible care, which includes interaction with nursing, dietary, therapy, and support services.
  • Provide documentation of safety rounds and all other items required by regulatory standards or policies and procedures.
  • Document patient interactions/needs in accordance with policy/procedures regarding utilization of organization’s electronic healthcare software.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or post-secondary education required
  • Post-secondary education in counseling, therapy, or psychology preferred

 

Experience:

  • 1-3 years working in a related field or situation preferred
