Overview

The Director Acute Adult Services is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the strategic plan for patient care services and nursing practice for the Acute Adult Division.  Operational oversight includes the Acute Adult inpatient departments (including ICU, 3-Surgical Specialty Unit, 4 West Telemetry, 4 Center Orthopedics, 5 Center Neurology/Oncology, 5 West Medical-Surgical, 6 Center, Pulmonary Specialty Unit, and 6 East, Inpatient Hospice), Respiratory Care, Inpatient Dialysis, IV Therapy and Inpatient Skin Care Services.  The Director works with the Market Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and other patient care leaders to create a destination experience environment for patients, families, team members and providers, with the responsibility for executing and ensuring that nursing and patient care are consistent with the mission, vision, values, goals and strategies of UnityPoint Health (UPH).

Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities

  • Communicates a shared vision regarding the strategic goals of an exceptional experience, fostered through One Team.
  • Engages team members in shared decision making by facilitating unit practice committees and similar shared governance committees.
  • Synthesizes and integrates divergent viewpoints for the good of the division and the organization. Provides visionary thinking on issues that impact Acute Adult Services. 
  • Serves as a professional role model and mentor for future nursing leaders.
  • Serves as a change agent, assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact, and process of change. Supports team members and leaders during times of difficult transitions. Creates the case for patient care transformation by articulating the rationale for the change and linking change to CR Market and UPH goals. Utilizes a data informed approach with a keen focus on the benefits to the patient first and team second. Recognizes and employs strategies that foster adoption of change and accelerates outcomes.
  • Supports and ensures team involvement in decision-making relative to care delivery and seeks input frequently on ways to improve the patient and staff member experience.
  • Works collaboratively with Market CNO to drive operational execution including but not limited to quality, patient safety and experience, budgetary processes, clinical outcomes, and workforce optimization.
  • Participates in Administrator On-Call duties.  
  • Builds credibility with medical staff as a champion for patient care, quality, and professional practice.
  • Collaborates with medical staff and interdisciplinary teams to implement evidence-based practice and process improvement.
  • Promotes use of management system standardized tools and methods to drive excellence and build sustainability for continuous improvement.
  • Ensures communication systems promote psychological safety and a just culture.
  • Ensures timely patient flow and throughput per strategic imperatives and implementation initiatives, monitoring data and contributing to process modifications and changes when needed.
  • Supports execution of the organization’s quality improvement program and goals. Sets targets that are evidence-based, with action plans designed to meet or exceed targets.
  • Interprets information from evidence-based nursing literature and research. Uses research findings for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models.
  • Utilizes UPH and market database management, decision support, and expert system programs to access information and analyze data from disparate sources for use in planning of patient care processes and systems.
  • Assists in designing and supporting accountable execution of safe clinical systems, processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures that written organizational clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice standards.
  • Ensures that Acute Adult Servies are staffed with capable people who are appropriately mentored and developed and have an opportunity to develop to their fullest potential to contribute to the Market and System’s goals.
  • Establishes mechanisms that provide for early identification and mentoring of team members with leadership potential. Develops talent and selects nursing leaders who align with our FOCUS Values.
  • Assures Professional Practice Model is adopted and implemented in all departments. Provides leadership in the implementation of patient care delivery strategies.
  • Represents UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital on health-related topics and issues through community involvement and Board participation.

Business Responsibilities

  • Develops annual and multiyear capital budget.
  • Develops annual operational budget to support strategic plan.
  • Executes the established plan through measurement, monitoring, and analysis of resource utilization and adjusting direction when needed.
  • Collaborates with Market Chief Nursing Officer to support program/practice changes to continually improve resource utilization.
  • Educates patient care team members on financial implications of patient care decisions.

Qualifications

  • BSN Required
  • Master’s degree (MSN, MBA, etc.) Required
  • Five to seven years of professional experience
  • Two to three years of leadership experience with evidence of successful change management
  • Current licensure in the State of Iowa
  • The ability to build teams as well as consensus and deal with complex situations with a large degree of variation in policies, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to lead, challenge and motivate team members.
  • Commitment to service excellence, quality and continuous performance improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in meeting regulatory and accreditation standards. 
  • Bias toward action.
  • Demonstrates a high level of emotional intelligence.  Has the capacity to be aware of, control, and appropriately express emotions, and handles interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
  • Record of success in implementing and/or overseeing programs and implementing patient care standards.  
  • Demonstrated successes delivering department and/or organizational outcomes and evidence of successful nursing leadership.  
  • Ability to collaborate in a matrixed organization.
  • Knowledge of the current healthcare environment and its impact on nursing practice
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
