The Co-Responder works directly with first responders and law enforcement officials to assist citizens experiencing a mental health crisis and improve collaboration between law enforcement and mental health care professionals. The goal of a co-responder is to decrease unnecessary trips to the emergency room, avoid preventable arrests, and reduce repeat mental health calls for first responders and law enforcement by connecting individuals to the appropriate resources.

Responsibilities

  • Responds in person to 911 behavioral health calls alongside law enforcement to conduct an assessment to recommend appropriate level of care and determine the need for resource referrals.
  • Complete and provide resources on behalf of individuals experiencing a crisis.
  • Completes in person or phone outreach to support individual's post-crisis by connecting them to needed services; this could also be after other 911 calls, like domestic violence, fatalities, or traumatic experiences.
  • Assist in program related activities to include data collection, reports, meetings, and relevant training.
  • Collaborates with care coordinators and other community agencies to advocate and partner for individual needs.
  • Provides community policing by locating transient clients, connecting with community stakeholders and members, and providing resources to community members.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Requires a BA, BS, BSW, or Masters degree in a behavioral healthcare services related field.

License(s)/Certification(s):

  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
