Responsible for performing phlebotomy duties and routine technical procedures in accordance with CLIA ’88 regulations and quality control standards. Supports primary care delivery through accurate specimen collection, patient care assistance, and administrative documentation.
Perform blood collection and labeling using approved identification protocols.
Ensure specimen integrity through proper collection, handling, and processing.
Communicate test results promptly to healthcare providers.
Assist providers with basic vital signs collection (after competency completion).
Participate in competency reviews and proficiency testing.
Support difficult phlebotomy cases and interact professionally with patients and staff.
Adhere to policies in Procedure, Lab, and Safety Manuals, along with CLIA, CAP, and COLA regulations.
Take responsibility for the quality and consistency of care delivered.
Accurately document patient interactions and test data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Perform and record quality control, equipment maintenance, and proficiency testing per CLIA standards.
Communicate necessary information to regulatory agencies.
Support collaboration between providers and support services.
Recognize and report safety risks, errors, and incidents promptly.
Understand specialty procedures and ensure compliance with pre-certification requirements.
Interpret lab values and understand their clinical impact within scope of role
Education:
High School diploma required (mandatory for complex CLIA labs).
Graduate of accredited MA, LPN, or RN program preferred.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or licensed LPN/RN in Iowa/Illinois preferred.
Experience:
Prior phlebotomy experience or certification required.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid driver’s license (if driving for work).
BLS certification required.
Skills & Abilities:
Fluent in English (written and verbal).
Strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills.
Cultural sensitivity and ability to work collaboratively.
Knowledge of clinical protocols, lab safety, and EHR systems.
Other:
Use of standard clinical equipment as required for position duties.
