Responsibilities

The Hospitalist Program Manager is responsible for the effective operation of the Hospitalist Program in regard to care delivery, quality and safety outcomes, employee engagement, patient experience, regulatory compliance and fiscal management.  This role uses research and outcomes data to support the design, development, and implementation of processes and programs that improve patient care and stimulate departmental and organizational growth. The Hospitalist Manager creates and maintains a culture of trust that fosters teamwork and the continual pursuit of excellence in the provision of care.

 

 

  • Lead the hospitalist program to ensure efficient operations, high performance, and continuous quality improvement in a dynamic healthcare environment.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, learning, teamwork, and professionalism aligned with UnityPoint Health’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Establish strong communication with hospital staff, providers, patients, and leadership to promote trust, collaboration, and staff development.

  • Oversee program finances, including budgeting, variance analysis, and monitoring of productivity and financial performance.

  • Manage hiring, onboarding, and training of new staff, ensuring accurate and timely completion of employment processes.

  • Organize and follow up on monthly staff meetings.

  • Accurately prepare and submit biweekly payroll reports on time.

  • Perform additional duties as needed to support smooth hospitalist program operations.

  • Oversee daily hospitalist program operations, including scheduling, staffing, coding, staff supervision, training, and adherence to policies and patient care standards.

  • Collaborate with hospital staff to streamline care, support early discharge planning, implement order sets, and manage data collection and communication.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN), a medical field, or equivalent education/experience (e.g., MHA).

Experience:

  • Recent hospital experience.

  • Prior healthcare management experience.

  • At least 2 years of business management experience, including oversight of a healthcare clinic operation.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license for work-related travel.

  • RN or specialty license (if required by medical staff).

  • BLS certification (if required by medical staff office).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory abilities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Initiative with sound independent judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving.

  • Understanding of diagnostic/procedural coding for insurance claims.

  • Knowledge of HR practices and patient relations.

  • Team-oriented with the ability to follow policies and procedures.

  • Experience in planning, organizing, delegating, and supervising.

  • Familiarity with process improvement strategies.

Other:

  • Proficient in using standard equipment necessary for role performance.
