Overview

Manages and oversees a Nursing Department and their programs; plans, organizes and directs all department functions and activities. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to all customers.  Maintains a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health with in the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Manages and directs the needs of all customers (staff, patients, families, physicians, etc.) providing appropriate coaching and participates in the necessary decisions to provide excellent care.
  • Manages and assesses the day to day activity – for example: oversees/participates/facilitates in committees, developing/reviewing policies and protocols, attends and serves on professional organizations, directs performance
  • improvement activities, etc.
  • Manages finances and is fiscally responsible for budget, revenue, FTE’s, supplies, etc.
  • Manages employees by establishing performance goals/assessments, allocating resources, counseling personnel and applying disciplinary measures as needed.
  • Assess, direct and maintain department facilities, equipment and supplies to promote evidence based practice and safety for all customers.
  • Monitor, oversee and assures proper documentation for compliance of an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Manage, oversee and delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required in assigned department in accordance with established policies, procedures
  • and standards of care.
  • Utilizes and manages holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care, project or task assigned.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments, and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned duties.
  • Analyze, evaluation and manage services to ensure the following: exceptional care delivery, serving more patients, effective and efficient operations, committed team members. To uphold the mission and vision of UPH: “Best

Development & Patient/Staff Education

  • Selects, trains/orient and facilitates appropriate staffing measures to meet department needs.
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance leadership skills/practice and sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and manage teaching strategies appropriate to all customers: age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to help support and provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates and manages workplace safety to preventing errors, accidents and infections; reports/takes action on potential or actual concerns immediately.

 

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates and holds others accountable for the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance and holds others to the same standard.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. Ensures that all staff meet the same standard.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, DIA, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year and assures that all staff meet the same standard.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse.  Brings any questions or concerns regarding
  • compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

Education:

 

 

 

 

Graduate of accredited nursing program

BSN degree preferred

Experience:

 

 

 

 

2 years of Leadership/Administration experience.

 

Strong clinical background

Prefer one (1) year of hospital experience or demonstrated clinical and leadership efficiency.

License(s)/Certification(s):

 

 

 

 

Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

 

Must possess and maintain following:

-       BCLS

-       ACLS

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
