Overview

The Therapy Manager is responsible for assuring timely and effective rehabilitation services to all patients referred to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, nutrition therapy, rehab counseling and recreational therapy.  Inpatients and outpatients served include patients across the lifespan.

 

The manager is accountable for the oversight of rehabilitation and staff management within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in a manner compatible with hospital mission, vision and strategic framework.  This includes planning, organizing, budgeting, supervising, evaluating, staffing, scheduling, training, mentoring and educating.

 

When providing direct patient care, the manager is responsible for evaluation, interpretation, planning, implementation, documentation and billing for services provided per hospital guidelines.

Responsibilities

Patient Care/Resource Management

  • Models patient outcome focused care and family centered practice.
  • Assures provision of patient care to meet patient needs through delivery of service in a timely manner and according to department's goals and scope of services.
  • Ensures development and implementation of evidence-based standards of care for the patient population.
  • Assures compliance with DNV, DIA, Iowa Board of Therapy Examiners and all applicable regulatory bodies for delivery of patient care.
  • Manages day-to-day operations for the department, including measurement of the department's effectiveness.
  • Analyzes available financial data for significant variances.
  • Investigates variances and initiates corrective action or justifies non-adherence to quality, financial and patient satisfaction outcome goals.
  • Addresses staffing levels to meet patient care and service needs.
  • Monitors and adjusts productivity as it relates to guidelines developed within the division
  • Collaborates with appropriate associates to assure adequate clinical competence of all disciplines.
  • Ensures the establishment and maintenance of an orientation program for new department associates, based on principles of adult learning.
  • Ensures in-service, on-the-job training and continuing education programming to meet identified staff development needs.
  • Ensures that proper communications and plans are coordinated with other hospital departments.
  • Participates in recruitment, interviewing, selection, promotion, transfer, status change and L.O.A. decisions.
  • Evaluates associates against established performance criteria, ensuring that all staff meet expectations.
  • Provides ongoing counseling and coaching with direct reports.
  • Models collaborative behaviors that facilitate achievement of department and program goals.
  • Initiates and processes disciplinary actions, demotions, and terminations as necessary.
  • Consults with appropriate persons regarding rehabilitation services provided through other cost centers as necessary.
  • Handles conflicting situations in a dignified and respectful manner.
  • Ensures physician, patient and family satisfaction with services provided.

Program Planning/Development

  • Conducts regular department meetings for problem solving, decision making and communication.
  • Collaborates with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation management, physicians and others to facilitate planning, implementation and evaluation of strategic plan and other initiatives.
  • Creates and implements goals and objectives.
  • Effectively communicates hospital and division mission, vision and strategic framework
  • Facilitates the organization and coordination of the delivery of services and care provided through the department.
  • Develops and revises as necessary the departmental structure required to meet department goals.
  • Develops annual F.T.E., operations, and capital expense budgets for the department.
  • Coordinates departmental performance improvement activities with hospital and division performance improvement plans.
  • Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
  • Continuously assesses and improves department performance.
  • Attends and contributes to education offerings.
  • Speaks to hospital and community groups, when appropriate.
  • Participates in community preventative and/or health maintenance projects/programs when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with available resource persons to plan, implement, and evaluate research projects, when appropriate.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria        

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, , DNV, DIA, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

  • Meets educational requirements as necessary for obtaining professional license as a PT, OT, SLP or Recreation therapist
  • Licensed or certified as required by discipline to practice in the State of Iowa 
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. 
  • Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English
  • Clinical skill competence in rehabilitation within own discipline in various clinical settings
  • Previous leadership experience or 5 years clinical experience plus basic management skills
  • Apply well-developed human relation skills in individual and group interactions
  • Experience in an interdisciplinary rehabilitation model
  • Comprehensive knowledge of rehabilitation theory and practice and an expanded knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts related to own professional clinical service area
  • Competence in computer word processing, spreadsheet and internet skills
  • Understand health care reform related to rehabilitation
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position
