The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) provides support to the Director and Managers within the ICU & step-down units. They assist, coordinate, and influence nursing practice excellence in the patient care area. The APN acts as a resource person for patient care associates and works cooperatively within the hospital community to coordinate nursing policy and education of staff, maintain standards of care, and performance improvement consistent with and under the direction of the established strategic plan, goals, and objectives for Patient Care Services.

Leadership · Demonstrates clinical leadership as a role model for staff nurses. · Builds partnerships that support and promote care coordination and care management strategies. · Consults nursing management regarding issues or barriers in delivery of care, staff achievement of competency, system concerns, provider concerns or specific patient care problems. · Participates in divisional and hospital shared governance infrastructure. · Coordinate and lead hospital-wide patient initiatives including, but not limited to delirium, pain, sedation, and diabetes. |
Clinical Excellence · Facilitates implementation of evidence based practice or nursing research studies and translates research findings into best nursing practice for care. · Partners with provider’s and patient care team members to achieve progress towards outcomes. · Maintains current knowledge of trends and advances in nursing practice. · Uses advanced concepts in nursing processes in the clinical setting. · Incorporates the St. Luke’s Hospital’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model into their daily nursing practice. |
Education · Serves as a resource to the nursing staff, as well as to other health care associates based on professional standards of care. · Assists with formulation of evidence based nursing policy and procedure. · Provides support and resources to the division for on-boarding of new associates. · Supports competency development and implementation within the division for nursing staff, including Patient Care Techs. · Serves as a resource for other members of the healthcare team, including providers, who are involved with performance improvement tools (e.g. Adaptive Design, PSDA, etc.). |
Research · Identifies pertinent research questions arising from clinical practice. · Assists with formulation of evidence based nursing policy and procedure. · Reports research findings to appropriate stakeholders. · Mentors staff on research process and implementation principles.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria · Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. · Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. · Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. · Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. · Responds to clinical needs/cares during times of surge as determined by CNE and nursing leadership. · Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. · Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:
| · Completion of an accredited nursing program · Master’s degree in nursing or healthcare-related field |

| · Three years of clinical experience

| · Current RN licensure in the State of Iowa or compact state · Current BLS certification · Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons | · Specialty certification
