Overview

RN/Nursing Supervisor, 4 Medical Inpatient Unit

Allen Hospital

Full-time hours, flex between shifts (7am-7pm, 7am-5pm, or 7am-3pm) other shifts as needed

 

Responsible for supervising the daily activities of the unit utilizing quality and cost-effective patient care principles to including operations, staffing levels and employee relations. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Collaborates with physicians and other health care workers, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care while maintaining a practice environment that reflects the ANA Code for Nurses, Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritizes, reassigns and redistributes work, to include scheduling and delegating workflow of patient care in an organized manner.
  • Reviews/reassigns patient assignments based on continuity and skill level of the team member.
  • Coordinates scheduling and maintains appropriate staffing levels and effectively communicates with others to ensure staffing requirements are met.
  • Collaborates with Manager to ensure unit-based orientation and training of newly hired team members is complete.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Educator to ensure the provision of staff education/in-services/specialized skilled training programs including competences.
  • Collaborates with the Manager/Director, effectively resolving complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises as they occur within the unit.
  • Provides assistance/orientation to those team members that are temporarily reassigned to their unit for the shift.
  • Evaluates and guides staff through coaching and provides immediate feedback and responds to difficult inquiries and problems. Demonstrates the ability to fairly and consistently interpret, apply and follow personnel policies/procedures.
  • Provides feedback and input to Manager/Director for ongoing performance management.
  • Completes and issues performance evaluations with input from the Manager/Director.
  • Collaborates with the Manager/Director to complete patient and employee rounding to meet standards.
  • Assists Manager/Director with follow-up on incident reports, performance improvement action plans and implementation of plans, monitoring of supplies/distribution and chart audits. Completes appropriate reports as delegated by Manager/Director.
  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
  • Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
  • Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments, and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Nursing.Bachelors of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • 2 or more years of nursing experience in a specific setting related to position specialty preferred. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Current license in the state of Iowa or meets criteria established by Iowa Board of Nursing. Advance certifications per specialty preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of field, in-depth knowledge of the “why’s”.
  • Ability to maintain current professional expertise.
  • Exhibits discretion and sound judgment in all aspects of the job.
  • Promotes positive interpersonal relations and serves as a role model within the department and with hospital personnel.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.
  • Customer/patient focused.
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
