Responsibilities

Clinical Practice—Trauma Coordinator
• Provides for the clinical needs of trauma patients, both directly and indirectly.
• Acts as a consultant, provides expertise in trauma care to nurses, pre-hospital providers and other health care professionals.
• Assists in the development of nursing standards of care for trauma patients in collaboration with appropriate disciplines.
• Participates in the development, implementation and ongoing assessment of trauma protocols.
• Collaborates with other healthcare professionals in providing continuity of care to trauma patients and families from admission through discharge.
Research—Trauma Coordinator
• Participates in multidisciplinary trauma research projects as investigator and/or coordinator.
• Integrates research findings into practice.
• Observes practice and investigates methods of delivering nursing care.
Performance Improvement—Trauma Coordinator
Education—Trauma Coordinator
• Coordinates and collaborates on nursing educational activities necessary to meet the objectives of the Trauma Services.
• Identifies learning needs of the nursing staff.
• In conjunction with staff development:
• Develops the overall plan for trauma-related inservices and continuing education activities.
• Administers the TNCC on a scheduled basis.
• Maintain TNCC certification.
• Maintain 16 hours of continuing trauma education every 4 years (4 hours of formal education and 12 hours of informal education).
Leadership—Trauma Coordiator
• Assists in formulating Trauma Service goals and policies.
• Communicates Trauma Service policies, procedures and goals to the nursing staff.
• Assists the Trauma Medical Director and nurse manager in the investigation and resolution of problems and concerns in the area of trauma care.
• Coordinates and participates in hospital Trauma recertification.
• Assists in the development, implementation and assessment of nursing performance improvement programs related to trauma care.
• Participates in the development and monitoring of trauma clinical indicators and reports findings to appropriate health team members
• Assists in the maintenance of the trauma registry by:
• Supervising data collection and monitoring of compliance.
• Participating in data analysis.
• Distributes reports to appropriate health team members.

Leadership—Supervisor
• If serving in a charge RN role, evaluates daily staffing needs. Collaborates with others in the leadership team to facilitate adjustments that meet the department needs
• Commits to the hours needed to achieve outcomes and develop others to assure round the clock leadership. Requires flexibility with hours worked and shifting priorities as the environment changes.
• Serves as a resource in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing gcare in the clinical departments.
• Assists in creating a positive work environment that contributes to safe and positive clinical outcomes.
• Assist with providing a thorough and adequate orientation program for new staff
• Assist with competency training and continuing education programming to ensure staff development needs are met for the department.
• Participate in performance improvement activities.
• Acts as the manager designee at hospital meetings and/or activities as directed by manager
• Completes chart reviews and provides feedback to staff using Just Culture when needed.
• Supervises nursing care in accordance with policies and nursing standards
• Provides guidance and supervision to staff to achieve compliance with organizational and unit policies and standards
• Assists with managerial activities of Emergency Services related to performance evaluations, staffing management of productivity, employee counseling, scheduling and compliance to policies, standards, performance improvement initiatives
• Assists manager with monthly unit meetings
• Assists manager with disciplinary action/termination

Qualifications

Education:

Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing required.
Bachelors of Science in Nursing preferred. 

 

Experience:

One-to-two years experience as an Emergency staff nurse.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current RN Licensure in State of Iowa or applicable compact state. Must be licensed in state of residence.

BLS, ACLS, TNCC, PALS, ENPC required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to delegate wisely, exercise good judgment, maintain good interpersonal relationships, adapt to change, evaluate critically and think creatively. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required for specialized area of assignment. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients. Must demonstrate effective communication skills.

Electronic and mechanical patient care equipment, office equipment, medications, including controlled substances and therapeutic gases.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTGloves, Hepa respirator, goggles, protective gowns.
