Overview

UnityPoint Health – Black Hawk Grundy Mental Health Center

Part-time; 20 hrs./week between 8 am – 430 pm; Flexible shift

 

The peer support specialist is responsible to support and enhance the lives of those diagnosed with Mental Illness by providing empathy, hope and support for peers on a mutual journey of recovery.  More common in the community based setting. Typically has lived through an experience, and one could become a certified peer support specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients in navigating the behavioral health and other Social Determinates of Health Systems
  • Meet with patients in clinics, homes, and communities
  • Assist patients in progressing toward their goals outlined in their treatment plan
  • Help patients access crisis and emergency care as needed
  • Provide individual and group psychoeducation
  • Provides culturally and linguistically appropriate services
  • Mentor patients
  • Ba a role model for recovery
  • May transport patients
  • May train other team members
  • May assist non-certified peers in obtaining certification
  • Participate in all required trainings and educational activities
  • Participate in department level meetings and huddles
  • Be responsive to email, phone messages and patient portal messages
  • Maintains accurate, concise, and current clinical documentation.
  • Maintain Peer certification and follow up with all required CEU training.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Lived experience with a serious mental illness with demonstrated stability in recovery.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Complete Peer Support Training
  • Write, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English
  • Certified Peer Support Specialist required within 1 year

Preferred:

  • Experience in working with adults with mental illness. 
  • Certified as a Peer Support Specialist or Peer Recovery Specialist through the Iowa Board of Certification. 
  • Knowledge of community resources.
