Overview

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Receives, evaluates, and follows up on patient referrals to the pulmonary rehab program. Provides care reflecting the practice of a professional, licensed Respiratory Therapist. Provides education, instruction, support, and guidance to patients / families, primarily in the outpatient setting. Primary responsibilities are with pulmonary patients; role also involves care of cardiac rehab patients under the supervision/guidance of cardiac rehab RNs. Will work at Iowa Lutheran Hospital and at West Des Moines- Lakeview.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes scientific principles to develop exercise prescriptions. Monitors client’s response to activity and adjusts treatment plan accordingly.
• Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
• Delivers high quality care while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills specific to the rehabilitation specialty in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
• Utilizes holistic approach (considering psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the individuals served.
• Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare team members within their scope of practice and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
• Utilizes critical thinking in developing appropriate interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of accredited Respiratory Care program.

 

Experience: 2 years recent experience as a Respiratory Therapist. Preferred: Knowledge of Home Care and/or oxygen delivery systems commonly used in the home. Comfortable and skilled with providing education to individuals and small groups.


License(s)/Certification(s): Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in Iowa. Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Microsoft Office – basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused. Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
