The Wound Healing Center is an outpatient department that specializes in care of patients with acute and chronic wounds and ostomy care. The Wound Healing Center’s mission is to provide a comprehensive, cost-effective approach to wound healing with a multi-specialty team that provides for the accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, prevention/reoccurrence of wounds, and the education of the patient and caregiver.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care 

  • Participate in nursing process under supervision of RN. 
  • Collaborates with RNs and other health care workers in implementing care within hospital policy and legal limitations.  
  • Exerts limited judgment in care of assigned patients.  
  • Maintains responsibility for equipment and supplies related to patient care.  
  • Assumes responsibility of maintaining current professional and clinical expertise.  
  • Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area.  
  • Demonstrates the ability to consistently meet the department work schedule.  
  • Documents care provided utilizing current technology.  
  • Appropriately delegates to unlicensed personnel.  
  • Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, OSHA, DNV and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. 

Clinical Excellence/Unit Functions 

  • Performs functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances. 
  • Abides by all Health System and departmental policies. 
  • Triages telephone calls to appropriate personnel and schedules patient appointments. 
  • Prepare patient chart prior to obtain first visit for medications, health history and insurance. 
  • Assist RN’s with testing as needed. 
  • Complete designated patient treatment with minimal assistance. Included but not limited to assess established wounds, call in prescription, documentation, vitals and faxing orders to outside facilities, photographing wounds. 
  • Register patients and other designated secretarial skills.  
  • Assist RN’s with quality data gathering.   

Basic UPH Performance Criteria  

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. 
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. 
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. 
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. 
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. 
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.  

Qualifications

Education:

- Graduate of accredited nursing program.

Experience:

- One year of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency required.

- Recent experience in the care of hospitalized adults preferred.

- Previous experience in an outpatient clinic setting preferred. 

- Previous experience with wound care preferred. 

License(s)/Certification(s):

- Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Licensec Practical Nurse (LPN) in Iowa. 

- Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Mandatory Reporter certification or obtain both within three months from date of hire. 

- Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

- Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent Engilsh language.

- Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheets, email and web browser.

- Multicultural sensitivity.

- Critical thinking skills using independent judgement in making decisions.

- Use of usual and customary equipment to perform essential functions of the position.

- Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities/hospitals.
