Overview

The Interventional Radiographer delivers specialized care and treatment to patients undergoing any type of interventional procedures.  The staff is on-call for off-shifts and weekends.  The Interventional Radiographer is responsible, under the direction of the Manager, to provide quality care to the patient undergoing procedures in the Vascular Interventional Lab.

Responsibilities

  • The associate is aware of hospital and department compliance for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
  • Successfully completes hospital-wide orientation, annual hospital competencies and department/unit specific competencies.
  • For the safety of our patients and co-workers, St. Luke’s Hospital requires seasonal and job related vaccinations. This is reviewed regularly during periodic health assessments.
  • Ability to function the Cardiac Cath Lab or Interventional Vascular Lab as the need arises.
  • Administers contrast agents according to procedure guidelines, and states correct flow rates utilizing power injector.
  • Maintains compliance and is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (i.e., IDPH, ACR, and TJC).
  • Understands and adheres to all safety practices (ALARA) while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to unnecessary ionizing radiation.
  • Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies and projects.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs as assigned by department.
  • Communicates with the department supervisors as necessary when problems or unusual circumstances arise and documents as necessary.
  • Prioritizes work appropriately and assists others as time and workload allows.
  • Attends in services, BCLS, ACLS, on-the-job training and continuing education programs to meet developmental needs and keep abreast of new technologies. Documents at least 24 hours of continuing education in two years with one hour in radiation safety per year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Able to take call based on “on-call” policy.
  • EKG rhythm interpretation skills.
  • Ability to perform in emergency or Code Blue roles. Maintains ACLS certification
  • Maintains ability to perform in an assertive yet supportive manner when functioning with physicians in the procedural setting.
  • Maintains knowledge of patient equipment and therapeutic modalities utilized in the Cath Lab or Vascular Interventional Lab.
  • Medications:
  • Maintains knowledge of medications used in the Cath Lab or Vascular Interventional Lab.
  • May assist in transporting medications that are not controlled substances.
  • May co-sign wastage of controlled substances in Pyxis.
  • May handle and assist in passing off medications to nurses or physicians in an emergency situation.
  • May draw up and hand off medications to physicians at the sterile field of a procedure.
  • Participates in education, community activities and performance improvement projects.
  • Oversees maintenance and provides troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Support and perform exams within the guidelines of the Imaging Gently Campaign.

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology and ARRT certified or eligible.
  • Must have current permit issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
  • BCLS certification.
  • Previous vascular/interventional lab experience desired.
