Rad Tech – Cardiac Cath Lab

As a member of the interdisciplinary Cardiac Cath Lab team, contributes professional Cardiovascular Technologist knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients undergoing invasive cardiac procedures.  The Cardiovascular Technologist will function in collaboration with the Registered Nurse team and under the direction of Physicians. 

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the needs of patients and families undergoing invasive cardiac procedures, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
  • Assists the physician with the development of an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in making judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of the patient.
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance Cardiovascular Tech practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited radiologic science program that is recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • One–two years of Radiology experience in the hospital environment preferred.
  • Holds Permit-to-Practice radiology in the state of Iowa.
  • Certified and holds current registration with the A.R.R.T. as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification or obtained with in 6 months of hire.
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) through CCI or Cardiac Interventional (CI) or Vascular Interventional (VI) through ARRT preferred.
  • Must meet requirements for standby call which includes a 20-minute response time from primary residence to hospital.
  • Knowledge in sterile technique and ability to demonstrate The Association of Peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) sterile technique guidelines.
  • Ability to assist cardiologist with left and right heart diagnostic and interventional catheterization.
  • Ability to assist cardiologist with peripheral/ carotid procedure.
  • Knowledge regarding proper use of temporary pacemaker and the ability to assist cardiologist with procedure.
  • Knowledge to proper post processing technique to achieve high optimize images.
  • Demonstrates critical care skills to patients with higher acuity (ED, ICU, or OR.)
  • Expertise related to basic electrophysiology including diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • Advance computer skills and technical skills required to operate EP specialty equipment, specifically but not limited to 3D mapping system for cardiac ablations.
  • Ability to assist in implantable cardiac device such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators.
  • Advance technical skills required to operate high risk equipment, specifically but not limited to Balloon Pump, Angio Jet, Cardiohelp and Impella.
  • Ability to assist Interventional Radiologist with vascular and Neuro-Endovascular procedures.
  • Advanced technical skills required to operate high risk interventional equipment specifically for Neuro-Endovascular procedures.
  • Knowledge in lab values specifically associated to each procedure.
  • Delivers high quality care while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required in the Cath Lab in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care under the direct supervision of the physician.
  • Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required in the administration of emergency medications used in the Cath Lab including under the direct supervision of the physician.
  • Demonstrates duties in hemodynamic monitoring and recording for pre, intra and post procedure patient assessment and patient care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiovascular medications and anti-arrhythmic drugs, including dosing, and side effects per ACLS guidelines.
  • Able to identify adverse events or unanticipated outcomes using critical thinking skills and notifies the medical staff including nurses and physicians appropriately.
  • Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to operate specialized equipment in the Cath Lab including, but not limited to the following: Perfusion equipment: intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), Impella heart pump, AngioJet. Coronary interventional equipment: rotational and pulse wave atherectomy. Basic Electrophysiology equipment including but not limited to 3D mapping systems, stimulations systems, and EP monitoring and recording system.  Interventional radiology perfusion equipment: Pneumbra.
  • Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to prepare and maintain sterile fields and to maintain a clean procedure environment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of radiation safety and practice including, but not limited to the following: Use of advanced imaging systems used in the Cath Lab setting. Use of radiation protection devices and exposure levels for both the associate and patient.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Able to perform the role of secondary circulator, scrub tech, and monitor.
