Overview

This position will have responsibilities at both St. Luke's Hospital and Jones Regional Medical Center.

 

The Clinical Informatics Specialist is responsible for the analysis, planning, implementation, on-going support and evaluation of clinical information systems that impact team members in the hospital, hospital out-patient clinics and provider offices.  Concentrated effort will be given to the process of training providers and clinical staff.  Responsibilities include representing the UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital team/departments on the UnityPoint Health work groups.  The Clinical Informatics Specialist is a change agent working with the providers and other clinical specialties in the design, training and implementation phases of projects, as well as ensuring that appropriate procedures and processes are developed for sustaining the application of new systems and projects.

Responsibilities

Collaboration/Support 

  • Acts as liaison between nursing, practitioners, support services and technology regarding the electronic medical record in order to ensure a safer, more efficient system that will enhance patient care delivery.
  • Collaborates with Medical Records (HIM), impacted departments, and end users in the chart correction process to ensure accurate and complete electronic medical records.
  • Provides troubleshooting support and assistance to resolve software problems, including outages and downtime events, with the electronic medical record and other applications to ensure tools are in place to support safe patient care.
  • Works directly with practitioners and clinical team members to promote efficient workflows and maintain secure and safe practices using the electronic medical record.
  • Evaluates existing workflows and makes recommendations to improve functionality and adoption of best practices through the enhancement/optimization process.
  • Participates in the testing of new or modified processes within the electronic health record as developed by the UnityPoint Health Information Technology build team.
  • Ensures that clinical information systems are in compliance with DNV, CMS and other regulatory standards.
  • Provides support at go-live for clinics, hospital departments as they transition to new documentation practices or as they join UnityPoint Health.
  • Follows through with end-user concerns/issues in a timely manner
  • Works with end-users to submit enhancement requests.

Education and Training

  • Develops and delivers training programs to practitioners and clinical team members on the use of the electronic medical record for credentialed applications, creating tip sheets and educational materials as needed.
  • Disseminates documentation changes, enhancements, and project information to practitioners and clinical team members.
  • Maintains knowledge base in the area of specialty by participating in electronic medical record system and vendor specific training opportunities.
  • Participates in shared governance and performance improvement activities at the department and/or organizational level.
  • Serves as a credential trainer in the EMR system and assists with training of the providers and clinical staff members.  Must complete training courses to be become an Epic Certified Trainer within 6 months of hire.

Networking

  • Participates in regional and system networking and user groups/committees to ensure competency in the use of the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborates with clinical team members and leaders at all sites in relation to the electronic medical record through on-going rounding and support.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in inpatient/provider setting with clinical expertise. (I.e. Nursing or other Healthcare Profession.)
  • Current RN License in the State of Iowa
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
