Overview

A highly functioning assistant organizes the Provider allowing for maximum efficiency of data collection, chronic disease surveillance, medical decision making, and patient education. The Clinical Assistant II preforms a variety of clinical and clerical tasks to expedite the patient flow and business activities of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the maintenance of a therapeutic environment that promotes effective patient care and promotes safety for staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Possesses knowledge about safety policies of the department and organization.
  • Works independently within the established guidelines of the practice
  • Assist the nurses with scheduling patient for tests and procedures.
  • Comfortable documenting and verbally presenting information to the provider about the patient· 
  • Assist the provider and nurse as needed with department procedures and exams.
  • Possess knowledge and skill to preform various clinical tasks.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to all ages.
  • Assist nursing staff by preparing patient for exams by taking vital signs (height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure).
  • Promotes flexibility to promote a smooth flow of patients in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Records in appropriate fields of the electronic medical record
  • Completes job responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Assists the clerical staff by scanning in records, obtaining preauthorization's, answering the phone, and scheduling appointments.
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
  • Integrates and demonstrates FOCUS values and Expectations for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures of UPHDM.
  • Balance team and individual responsibilities; be open and objective to other's views; give and welcome feedback; contribute to positive team goals; and put the success of the team above own interests.
  • Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, OSHA, and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: The following are performed on an as needed basis:

  • This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.
  • Performs functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances.

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION: Certified as a CMA medical assistant 
  • EXPERIENCE:One year experience with clinical and clerical in a medical setting.One year of oncology-related experience preferred. 
  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:Certificate Program in medical assisting
  • MENTAL/COGNITIVE DEMANDS:Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to take initiative and exercise independent judgment, decision making and problem solving expertise. Ability to work as a collaborative team member.Adaptable, flexible, able to multi-taskPassionate about oncology patients & their families. Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies and procedures
