Shift: 1000-2230 every other Sunday. FTE .15

 

 

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional emergency/non-emergency medical technician knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families in the pre-hospital and emergency room settings. Maintains proficiency in knowledge and skills as described by the Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services Scope of Practice to provide basic care to emergency room patient.

Responsibilities

  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Carries out high quality patient care while following the scope of practice set out by the Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services Scope of Practice.
  • Performs Triage assessment process per specific department standards to include patient history, physical, and psycho-social assessment. 
  • Performs hospital based for individual’s level of certification and assists registered nurses in Emergency Room and other patient care areas.
  • Implements the plan of care according to current standards of nursing practice, evidence-based practice, and hospital protocol/procedures under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Administers medications and treatments within scope of practice. Assists with CPR, Trauma patient care when needed.
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance patient care practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Integrates patient/family teaching throughout the hospitalization, including the plan and goals of care, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching. 
  • Integrates preventative health maintenance into the education plan.
  • Assists in the orientation of new associates by acting as a resource and mentor to associates. 
  • Collaborates with unit leadership, as appropriate. Serves in preceptor role, as appropriate.
    Utilizes evidenced based models of learning.

Qualifications

 

  • Completion of an Emergency Medical Technician course. Associate degree preferred.
  • Possess current Emergency Medical Technician-Basic licensure in the State of Iowa.
    Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
  • Multicultural sensitivity.
  • Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required to perform basic/advanced care procedures in the administration of medication therapy and the operation of specialized equipment.
  • Ability to complete a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through in-hospital training.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
