Overview

This position will be located at the Peosta Pharmacy. 

 

As a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Retail Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist in delivering pharmacy services to retail patients.  Under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist, the Retail Pharmacy Technician provides safe, accurate and optimal medication handling and helps maintains a professional practice environment while cultivating relationships with providers and patients.

Responsibilities

Prescription Processing

  • Accurately enters new prescriptions and prescription refills into pharmacy computer system.
  • Updates patient information including insurance so that prescriptions adjudicate.
  • Resolves third-party rejects by identifying the need for override or prior authorization and contacts the appropriate people to assist in processing of claims.
  • Prepares prescriptions by printing labels, counting or pouring medication and placing in correct container, and labeling prescriptions so that pharmacist can verify for accuracy.

Customer Care

  • Promptly greets patients as they enter the pharmacy.
  • Receives handwritten prescriptions and acquires the information needed in processing the prescription.
  • Assists patients in finding over-the-counter products and ordering if necessary.
  • Answers phones in courteous manner, identifying the pharmacy and who they are.
  • Accepts refill requests, transfers calls when appropriate.
  • Completes cash register transactions, balances drawer, and prepares deposits when needed.

Inventory Management

  • Orders prescription and non-prescription medications through wholesaler or secondary vendor.
  • Assists pharmacist in maintaining appropriate inventory levels by adjusting order points as necessary.
  • Removes outdates from stock and places in designated location in preparation for return.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria         

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:

 

 

 

High School diploma or GED

 

Experience:

 

 

 

 

 

At least one (1) year of retail pharmacy experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

 

 

 

 

·         Registration in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy

·         Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

 

 

 

 

·         Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.

·         Basic computer knowledge using word processing, e-mail, and web browser.

 

 

 

Other:

 

 

 

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
