The clinic sonographer is required to operate and maintain specialized ultrasound equipment used in performing detailed fetal evaluations and procedures. The sonographer should provide education to families while evaluating the fetus in real time, showing compassion and being sensitive to families, many of whom are frightened about the fetus, mother, or both. The sonographer will assistant the physician and clinical teams in history taking and presentation of complex cases to the physician, interpretation of the technical aspects of the completed examination, and performance of invasive fetal procedures.

Key Accountability · Patient Care o Perform diagnostic ultrasounds while providing proper explanation of procedures to patients, their families, and others as needed to ensure the patient understands the examination to be performed o Be proficient in performing the following ultrasound studies: § Transabdominal and transvaginal § Detailed fetal evaluation § Fetal Echocardiography § Nuchal translucency and nasal bonus § Multiple gestations § Fetal Doppler interrogation o Diagnose and analyze fetal anomalies in partnership with the physician o Diagnose and analyze fetal growth disturbance o Maternal uterine artery Doppler interrogation o Maternal general abdominal/pelvic evaluation § Adnexa § Renal § Liver & gallbladder o Assist MFM physician in: § History taking and presentation of complex MFM patient cases to the physician § Interpretation of the technical aspects of the completed examination § Performance of invasive fetal procedures § Practice sterile technique and prevent cross contamination o Travel to outreach clinics as needed o Assist in the transfer of patients to and from the examination table and operate proper immobilization devices for positioning or transporting as required o Be aware of what is happening in clinic/department and the organization by attending clinic/department meetings, reading emails and regularly checking information on the organization’s intranet site o

Key Accountability · Patient Education o Be the “face of the practice” by performing diagnostic ultrasounds. o Demonstrate to and educate families while evaluating their fetuses in real time § Be sensitive to and compassionate with families, many of whom are frightened about the fetus, mother, or both § Flexibility to accommodate add-on cases for urgent reasons § Demonstrate initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations to make the patient feel special o Provide proper explanation of procedures to patients, their families, and others as needed to insure the patient understands the examination to be performed · Clinical and Staff Education o Assist in the educational training of the student ultrasound technologists § Train new ultrasound hires o Provide sonography education as requested by other members of the health care team: § Residents & students | 25% |
Key Accountability · Information Technology o Operate and maintain specialized GE Voluson ultrasound equipment. o Perform and report exams using GE Viewpoint ultrasound scanning and reporting software o Distribute patient digital images and provider reports utilizing Trice software. o Evaluate requisitions for the proper and accurate completion of the ultrasound examinations o Be proficient in Epic electronic health record in order to: § Coordinate the work schedule for patients and procedures for efficient patient flow § Create orders for incoming referrals § Oversee and implement office and procedure billing and coding § Review patient history prior to all ultrasound exam § Chart and archive ultrasound reports into EHR § Retrieve and review pertinent laboratory and other test results § Manage ultrasound schedule and coordinate with physician and nurse schedules o Assist with keeping up to date on new technology and research o Conformance with established ultrasound techniques and procedures by proper selection of settings and accurate operation of equipment

Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:
| Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
| Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography |
Experience:
|
| 2-3 years work-related experience
|
License(s)/Certification(s):
| Registered or eligible for certification by American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in Ob/Gyn
Fetal echocardiography certified or willing to pursue certification shortly after starting
Nuchal Translucency & Nasal Bone Certification is required after 1 year in the office
Mandatory reporter certification
CPR certification
Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. |
