Hours: 32 hours/week, Every other weekend, holiday rotation
Shift: Night shift, variable 7p-7a and 11p-7a
Performs Patient Care Activities as delegated by the Nurse and/or Physician for patients of all age’s groups with both acute and chronic health problems. The Licensed Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role, phlebotomy, 12-lead ECG tracings, assisting with O2 needs and IV access.

Under the direct supervision of the RN provides indirect care that supports the Emergency Department mission by: · PARTICIPATION: o in cost containment o development/maintenance of positive work environment o minimizing overtime o attending required classes and meetings o participating in unit committees o adheres to all policies and procedures · PROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY: o applies protective devices correctly o anticipates patient request, makes rounds every hour as a minimum o assists RN in planning patient care o maintains a safe unit environment · PROMOTING INFECTION CONTROL: o washes hands before and after patient contact o handles soiled linen, equipment and instruments per protocol o maintains sterile asepsis o changes and secures dressings o maintains isolation technique · PROMOTING PERSONAL SAFETY: o utilizes p.p.e. appropriately o keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side · PROVIDES DAILY INVENTORY MAINTENANCE: o maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses station, utility rooms) clean/stocked o restocks equipment in patient rooms o accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers, pulse oximeters, glucometers and other pertinent equipment o completes appropriate work form for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service | 25% |
Provides direct patient care that demonstrates our mission and values. Evidenced by: · PROVIDES CARE AS DIRECTED: o oxygen therapy including pulse oximetry, oral and nasal airways insertion oral suctioning and placement of 02 per cannula and non-rebreather mask o Foley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement, minicath – excludes children and infants o performs and documents selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording o performs lab testing as appropriate o provides and documents fluid management per policy - peripheral IV site care, observe, measure, report IV flow rate, remove peripheral IV catheters o provides care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusion o Performs splint application o Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing. o Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies. · PROVIDES OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF PATIENT INFORMATION PER POLICY: o temperatures - oral, rectal (axillary only under the direction of RN) o Pulse - apical and radial, o Blood pressure, o height and weight, o intake and output, o pain ratings | 25% |
Demonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions. Performs and documents special procedures per policy: · application of heat/cold · decubitus care · pelvic exam setup · I & D setup · surgical skin prep · apply ace/TEDS/binders · apply/remove leads · assist coughing & deep breathing · assist with physical exam · oral suctioning · nasopharyngeal suctioning · maintain and clean suction equipment · application of hypo/hyperthermia unit · care of oxygen equipment. · room set-up for trauma · suture set-up · moderate sedation set-up · patient prep for any procedure · Demonstrates a practical problem solving approach to patient moving and handling issues. · Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment. | 20% |
Performs direct patient care that significantly impacts patient satisfaction evidenced by: · PROMOTION OF PATIENT WELLNESS: o maintain a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered o ready to monitor patient post-procedure o participates in admission, transport and discharge of patients · assist patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort · ASSIST PATIENTS WITH NUTRITION MANAGEMENT: o prepares patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrives o delivers trays o documents intake per policy o feeds dependent patients as needed o provides fresh water, ice and snacks. · PROVIDES ASSISTANCE WITH ELIMINATION PROCEDURES: o offers/removes bedpans and urinals o provides catheter care per policy o removes Foley catheters o Applies external urinary catheter o empty urinary drainage bags using goggles and gloves o collect specimens for ordered tests o catheterize female and male patients o communicates any intake and output | 20% |

Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:
| Completion of an approved training course for Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate and has an active Illinois State or National License | High School graduate or GED equivalent

Experience:
| Minimum of one year of acute care or hospital experience. 1-3 years of experience in/with EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic |

| Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire/start date. Must possess and maintain current EMT-Intermediate certification OR EMT-Paramedic certification. | Crisis Prevention (CPI) certification within one year of hire/start date. |
