Director, RN Clinical Services - Medical Units

Allen Hospital - Waterloo, IA

Responsible for patient care and clinical practice provided in the Inpatient Medical Nursing units focused on creating an environment where team members can provide exceptional patient experience, safe, quality patient care, creates efficiencies and decreases the cost of providing health care. Responsible for 3 Medical and 4 Medical As well as any overflow units. Leads the Managers and Educators of these areas.

  • Provides leadership to Medical Division to ensure effective operations, optimizing performance and continually improving quality of care in a vastly changing health care environment
  • Responsible for creating a culture of learning, teamwork and professional practice, consistent with the mission vision and values of UnityPoint - Allen.
  • Establish effective mechanisms of communication with team members and the leadership team to foster an environment of openness, trust, teamwork and staff development
  • Participate in continued development of managers, supervisors and high potential individuals
  • Effectively resolves complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises.
  • Rounds with team members monthly reviewing KaiNexus and their progress towards goals.  Responsible for creating and maintaining a positive, energetic work environment throughout the medical-surgical division
  • Assures the budgetary, quality, and patient/team member/provider experience targets are met and linked to organizational strategies.
  • Implements programs related to and supporting population health and risk initiatives. Initiatives will thoughtfully consider the minimizing of clinical variation through evidenced best practices, including effective handoff communications between team members and departments.
  • Uses the Triple Aim approach of increasing patient satisfaction, increasing efficiencies and decreasing costs in all decisions regarding the Medical Division. These strategies will be developed and updated as needed, all while continuing to demonstrate our commitment and loyalty to the patient/families we serve.
  • Develops succession plans for expected and unexpected vacancies.

Patient Care

  • Effectively resolves complex unit situations, such as patient complaints and crises.
  • Participate in patient rounding to ensure that team members are meeting the patient/family needs. Follow-up from rounds includes coaching and/or recognition of team members.
  • Collaborates proactively with medical staff through physician contact with emphasis on patient care. Assures that physicians’ rounding needs are met.
  • Ensures the patient safety needs are met through implementation of technology and interventions available to team members.

Performance Improvement

  • Supports the unit based performance improvement initiatives in data collection, data evaluation, and implementation of action plans, assuring performance improvement outcomes are met.
  • Participates in the Organizational Safety Huddle.
  • Reviews events daily and completes thorough follow-up within 7 days of event. Follow-up includes a plan of action to prevent further re-occurrence.   Ensure timely follow-up with events in the Medical Division
  • Participates in activities to reduce readmissions
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory bodies such as Joint Commission and DIA.
  • Participates in activities to reduce readmissions


  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.  BSN required. MSN preferred
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in medical surgical nursing
  • Previous  health care management experience preferred
  • Valid Iowa nursing License.
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
